Brisbane and the south-east
Most of the state's walls are within 150 km of Brisbane as the crow flies. The capital has the widest choice, from Urban Climb's three gyms and two 9 Degrees bouldering gyms to roped centres such as Crank in MacGregor, Rocksports in Fortitude Valley and BOUNCE Hendra, whose IFSC-certified speed walls are the only ones in Queensland; the Brisbane page covers them all. The Gold Coast has bouldering gyms from Upper Coomera to Currumbin Waters and a roped gym at Burleigh Heads, and the Sunshine Coast has bouldering in Forest Glen, Birtinya and Baringa and ropes at Rockit in Warana.
Inland, GRIPswich Bouldering opened in central Ipswich in June 2026 as the city's first bouldering gym, and Climb Toowoomba, run by Climb Australia, opened in October 2024 as Toowoomba's first full-size bouldering gym. On the Western Downs, Chinchilla's Botanic Parkland has a free bouldering arch beside its water park. Gympie has Boulderlounge, opened by local climbers in 2026 with a MoonBoard and a spray wall, and the free steel boulders of the Gympie Youth Precinct climbing wall beside the skate park in Nelson Reserve, lit until 9pm.
Central and north Queensland
North of Gympie the walls are far apart, and each serves a wide area. Rocky Climb opened in central Rockhampton in June 2026 with more than 200 m² of bouldering, 17 rope routes up to 9 metres with five auto-belays, Moon and Kilter boards. About 110 km to the south-east, near Gladstone, Tannum Fitness Centre in Tannum Sands has a ten-station top-rope wall in a family-run leisure centre; it doesn't publish climbing prices, so ring before you go.
Urban Climb Townsville opened in Idalia in January 2023 as a bouldering gym, and its memberships cover every Urban Climb gym. Cairns, nearly 1,400 km north of Brisbane as the crow flies, has Defy Gravity Bouldering in Manunda, which shares a site with a kids' trampoline park and doesn't publish its prices, and the free Cairns Esplanade Bouldering Park: sculpted boulders under fig trees on the waterfront, open daily until 9:30pm. For ropes, the volunteer-run Cairns Climbing Club holds top-rope nights at The Northern Outlook in Redlynch, open to anyone on Mondays. About 70 km further south, Innisfail has the Fitzgerald Esplanade Boulder Wall, a free 2.4-metre boulder beside the skate park that Cassowary Coast Regional Council unveiled in 2021.
Chains, styles and prices
Three chains have more than one gym in the state: Urban Climb, 9 Degrees (Enoggera and Morningside) and Alpine Indoor Climbing, whose day pass covers its Robina and Currumbin gyms on the same day. Most walls are bouldering-only. Outside Brisbane, the main roped walls are On Belay Climbing at Burleigh Heads, Rockit at Warana, Rocky Climb and Tannum Sands, and leading needs a gym's lead course or competency check first.
Adult casual entry costs $22 to $28 at most gyms, shoe hire $5 to $7.50, and most memberships cost $120 to $175 a month, usually billed weekly or fortnightly. Many gyms add a free week or two after a first paid visit, and several, including GRIPswich, Climb Toowoomba, Bould Move and Boulder Heads, accept the Queensland Government's Play On vouchers for children's passes and programmes.
Competitions and clubs
Sport Climbing Queensland runs the state titles every year in bouldering, lead and speed for youth and open climbers, plus a Queensland speed series. The venues change from year to year: BOUNCE Hendra hosted the 2026 lead and speed titles, and recent youth boulder titles have gone to Flow Bouldering on the Sunshine Coast, Cutloose on the Gold Coast and GRIPswich in Ipswich. The lead and boulder titles are also the selection events for Queensland's open and youth teams, which go on to the national championships.
Outdoors, the Australian Climbing Association Queensland is the peak body for recreational climbing and works with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) on access to crags. No Queensland university has a public wall on our listings, but the UQ Mountain Club, affiliated with UQ Sport and open to non-students, climbs at Kangaroo Point Cliffs two evenings a week and runs weekend trips.
Outdoor climbing
Brisbane has its own crag at Kangaroo Point Cliffs, old quarry walls of volcanic tuff across the river from the CBD, lit by floodlights at night. One of the south-east's best-known crags is Frog Buttress on Mount French in Moogerah Peaks National Park, near Boonah: rhyolite columns up to 50 metres high with more than 400 routes, almost all protected with traditional gear, and a small campground that has to be booked. In the Glass House Mountains, Mount Ngungun has 20 to 40-metre roped routes, while Tibrogargan and Beerwah are serious undertakings, and QPWS also lists the rhyolite bluffs of Point Glorious in Mapleton National Park and the bluffs of Brooyar State Forest. In the north, Castle Hill rises from central Townsville with pink granite routes over 100 metres long, and the Cairns area is mostly bouldering on coastal granite.
The south-east's crags are best in winter, since summer heat rules out climbing in the middle of the day, and the tropical north is also at its best in the cooler months. Moogerah Peaks has no QPWS-approved anchors, installing or replacing bolts in Queensland's parks needs QPWS's written authority, and QPWS asks climbers to consider not climbing mountains that are sacred to First Nations people.
