Roped climbing

Parthian Climbing Southampton opened in April 2021 at Adanac Park in Nursling, on the north-west edge of the city. It has about 120 top-rope lines and 75 lead routes, auto-belays, two 10-metre speed lanes and a two-floor bouldering area that includes the competition wall used at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Ropes are reset quarterly, and its Winter Bouldering League runs one Tuesday a month through the winter.

On Calshot Spit, at the mouth of Southampton Water, Hampshire County Council's Calshot Activities Centre has tall roped walls and a bouldering area inside its historic seaplane hangars. Helmets are compulsory for under-11s, and hours change with the centre's programme, so check before you set off. Golden Gecko in Romsey, open since 2015, has bouldering, a top-rope tower and auto-belays, with shoes and harnesses included in the entry price.

Bouldering

The Climbing Hangar Southampton opened in summer 2025 and covers 28,000 sq ft, with more than 300 problems reset weekly, a 50° Kilter Board, a Tension Board 2 and a MoonBoard, and a strength gym and free shoe hire included with entry. The minimum age is 7.

Boulder Shack, built by local climbers in 2017 with the help of crowdfunding and now run as a not-for-profit, resets a different wall every Friday. It has a training area, a yoga studio and a café, and its Mega Series competition runs a round every two months. Boulder Shack and Golden Gecko both belong to the Independent Climbing Wall Collective, so their members get free visits to other independent walls in the network.

On Highfield Campus, the University of Southampton Climbing Wall opened in 2024 in the Jubilee Sport and Recreation Centre. It is open to the public as well as students and staff: the bouldering wall is open daily, and the auto-belays are climbed in supervised sessions. Everyone needs an induction first, and you must be 17 or over to book.

Prices

In October 2026 an adult day pass cost between £10.99 (the university, pay as you go) and £17 (the Climbing Hangar), with most walls charging £13 to £16. Off-peak entry is cheaper at most of them: £12.50 on weekdays at Boulder Shack, for example. Monthly memberships ran from about £38 at the Climbing Hangar to £60 at Parthian, with Golden Gecko at £48 and Boulder Shack at £55. Parthian adds a one-off £3.50 registration fee on your first visit, and kit hire is extra at most walls except Golden Gecko and the Climbing Hangar.

Beginners and children

Bouldering is the easiest way in: at Boulder Shack, first-timers book a 25-minute induction, and the Climbing Hangar adds a 30-minute Intro to Bouldering for £5. For roped climbing, Parthian and Golden Gecko run beginner and belay courses, and Calshot runs taster sessions. For children, Parthian has Wild Climbers for ages 3 to 6 and NICAS courses, Boulder Shack runs Climbing Tots for 2 to 5-year-olds and a Junior Climbing Club, and Golden Gecko has after-school clubs, holiday clubs and an SEN climbing club.

Further afield

Across the water, Red Spider in Fareham has over 200 boulder problems on two floors, and the Portsmouth walls are covered on our Portsmouth page. The Isle of Wight has a roped wall at Wight Climbing in Freshwater and an outdoor wall at Sandown Rocks, both run as booked sessions.

Climbing outdoors

Hampshire has no crags of its own, so Southampton climbers mostly head west to Dorset. Portland is one of the biggest sport climbing areas in England, with limestone sea cliffs and old quarries full of bolted routes, deep-water solos and boulder problems, described in the Climbers' Club's definitive guide. Parthian also runs outdoor sessions for climbers making the move from indoors.
