Known for its scenic parks, like Avenham and Miller Parks, and its proximity to the Ribble Valley, it’s a great spot for those who love the outdoors. Preston’s climbing scene is thriving, with facilities like Boulder UK and Preston Wall offering a wide mix of some of the best indoor climbing you can find in the north of England. PrestonWall is inside West View Leisure Centre, east of the city centre, and is run by Lakeland Climbing Centres, which also runs KendalWall and LancasterWall. After the leisure centre's refurbishment, reopened in 2021, it has about 700 m² of roped climbing and 500 m² of bouldering, with top-rope and lead walls, auto-belays, a digital training board and boulders reset every week. It runs a Thursday bouldering social, a club for newly signed-off rope climbers and Geckos sessions for children from 5.
Boulder UK, at Walton Summit on the southern edge of Preston, is an independent bouldering centre with more than 150 problems from V0 to V8+ reset weekly, a competition wall, digital Beastmaker boards, a strength gym and a café. It hosts the Plywood Masters competition.
Onyx Climbing in Blackburn, about 16 km east of Preston, has two bouldering rooms with more than 150 problems set weekly in an outdoor-inspired style, a café, youth clubs, a weekly bouldering series and monthly social nights. Blackpool Sports Centre on West Park Drive has a council-run roped wall and bouldering wall with low pay-as-you-go prices; you need to pass a competency assessment before climbing on your own, or you can join instructor-led adult sessions and NICAS lessons for children.
In October 2026 an adult day pass cost £16.50 at PrestonWall and £15 at Boulder UK, where a one-off £5 registration fee applies. Onyx charged £11.50 with no registration fee, and Blackpool's council wall was by far the cheapest, at £7.55 or less for residents. Monthly memberships were £66 at PrestonWall (plus a £20 start-up fee), £53 at Boulder UK with no contract, and £38 at Onyx. Students get cheaper entry on set days at PrestonWall (Wednesdays) and Boulder UK.
Boulder UK and Onyx are the simplest places to try climbing, as you only need a short induction. To learn to belay, PrestonWall and Blackpool both teach rope skills. For children, PrestonWall's Geckos sessions start at 5, Blackpool runs Little Monkeys sessions for 5- and 6-year-olds and junior pay-and-play from 7, and Onyx charges £8 for under-8s including shoe hire.
Lancashire's quarries are close by. Anglezarke, near Horwich and Chorley, is a horseshoe-shaped sandstone quarry with routes all around its rim, including the well-known Golden Tower. North of Lancaster, Trowbarrow is a limestone quarry in a local nature reserve near Silverdale, a good evening crag and a dry-weather alternative to the Lake District; top-roping and abseiling are banned on its Main Wall. For mountain crags, the Lake District is about an hour up the M6.
