Bouldering

Blocs opened on the south side in 2018 as Alberta's largest bouldering-only gym, a 19,000 sq ft open-plan space with 14.5-foot walls, new problems every week, a training area with a MoonBoard and a free-weights room. First-timers get a free one-hour intro class, and its Crush Crew night each month is for women and gender-diverse climbers.

Rock Jungle's Boulders, downtown beside MacEwan University and the Ice District, has more than 100 problems reset every week and a café, the Dirtbag Café. Its newest gym, Niche on 71 Avenue, has 7,500 sq ft of bouldering on 16-foot walls and bills itself as the city's only 24-hour climbing gym, with round-the-clock access for members.

Top rope and lead

Factory in the west end, formerly Rock Jungle Fitness, is the Rock Jungle gym with ropes: 33 top-rope stations, a lead area, auto-belays and two floors of bouldering, and it is home to the Rock Jungle Panthers competition team. Vertically Inclined on Argyll Road is one of the city's longest-running gyms, with top rope, lead, auto-belays and bouldering; newcomers can drop in for a Climbing Adventure, a short rope orientation with all the gear. School groups use the walls on weekdays, so book before 16:00. On North Campus, the University of Alberta's Wilson Climbing Centre has a bouldering lounge and a loft of top-rope and lead routes, and the public can climb there with a drop-in pass or membership.

Climb YEG: ice and dry-tooling in the river valley

Climb YEG is an outdoor climbing tower in Louise McKinney Riverfront Park, below downtown. It has dry-tool routes up to 72 feet on top rope or lead, ice climbing in winter, and a speed wall and multi-pitch training wall in summer, with introductory ice and dry-tool sessions for beginners. The tower hosted the final of the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup in February 2026, and in February 2027 it hosts both the World Cup final (25–27 February) and the Ice Climbing World Youth Championships (25–28 February).

Prices and passes

In October 2026 an adult day pass cost $17 at the Wilson centre, $20 at Climb YEG, $21 at Blocs ($16 before 13:00 on weekdays), $23 at Vertically Inclined without gear and $25.75 at the Rock Jungle gyms, before tax. Rock Jungle's monthly membership ($93.75) and its shareable ten-visit punch pass work at all three of its gyms.

Outdoor climbing

There are no crags near the city. The nearest mountain rock is around Jasper, about 365 km and close to four hours west on Highway 16, where Cinquefoil Crag has around 40 routes suited to beginners and intermediate climbers. The Bow Valley is a similar distance south: see climbing in Canmore and the Bow Valley. The Alpine Club of Canada's Edmonton Section, active since 1913, runs rock and ice trips and gym nights.

Competitions and teams

The Alberta Climbing Association's 2026–27 season includes a youth bouldering competition at Factory on 24 October 2026, a bouldering local at Blocs on 28 November 2026 and another at Niche on 23 January 2027. Youth climbers can join the Rock Jungle Panthers, Blocs' performance and development teams or Vertically Inclined's training teams.
