Club climbing nights in Cairns

The Cairns Climbing Club is a non-profit club, run entirely by volunteers, that has held indoor climbing nights since 2016. It climbs in the tallest building on the property of The Northern Outlook, an outdoor education centre at 646 Redlynch Intake Road in Redlynch, on the road to Crystal Cascades. The centre runs the climbing hall and supplies the harnesses, helmets, ropes and shoes, while the club's guides and door volunteers run the evenings.

The wall

The hall has tall, textured walls fitted with rope stations and a few auto-belays. Climbing is on top ropes, belayed in pairs with a back-up belayer on the installed rope stations; members aged 18 and over can earn a solo-belay licence and use the club's Petzl GriGri+ devices. The bottom 3 m of the walls can be bouldered without a rope, and helmets are worn close to the wall.

Visiting

• Everybody is welcome on Monday nights, 18:00 to 20:30. Your first visit must be a Monday, when volunteers give you an induction and teach you to climb and belay safely.
• A second night each week, on a Wednesday or Thursday, is for regular members who pay an annual fee.
• Everyone, spectators included, must book online beforehand: the hall holds 30 people, and dates open two weeks ahead.
• Entry is $20 for adults and $16 for under-18s, with gear included.
• There's no minimum age, but parents climb with their children and learn to belay them: the club doesn't offer lessons.
• Heavy rain can flood the causeway to the site, so check the club's Facebook group before setting off on a wet day.
