Climbing Walls in Carlisle and North Cumbria

Eden Rock Carlisle

Eden Rock, just off the M6, is the city's climbing centre and part of the group that also runs walls in Newcastle and Edinburgh. It's a bouldering centre with a cave, a barrel, friction and textured slabs, a circuit board and a competition wall, plus a separate kids' room, a training area, a climbing shop and a café. It runs classes for adults and for children from 4 to 17, and a winter bouldering series on the comp wall through the autumn and winter.

Roped climbing in north Cumbria

Carlisle has no full-height roped centre of its own. The nearest is Penrith Leisure Centre, run by Better, where an 8m wall has top ropes, four auto-belays and an overhanging prow. It's unstaffed, so it suits climbers who already know how to belay and bring their own kit, and junior courses start at 5.

Keswick, about 45 minutes' drive away, has two walls. Kong Adventure Centre has around 50 top-rope and lead lines up to 12m, auto-belays, a bouldering room and a training area with a MoonBoard and a spray wall. Keswick Climbing Wall, on a farm near Castlerigg Stone Circle, has more than 40 top ropes and a bouldering area, with big doors that open onto the fells. Over the border, Bouldover in Dumfries town centre is a small independent bouldering wall with 4.5m walls and a kids' club.

Prices and passes

In October 2026 adult entry at Eden Rock cost £12.50, plus a £5 yearly membership, or £10.50 for concessions and juniors, and students paid £7.50 on Wednesdays and Fridays. Monthly passes were £32 for students and £50 for concessions, and family plans ran from £65 to £120 a month. Penrith's wall was £7.40 for Better members on pay-as-you-go. In Keswick, Kong charged £15.50 for a day and £113 for a month's pass, and Keswick Climbing Wall charged £10 for entry and £25 for a beginner's lesson with a harness.

Beginners and kids

Eden Rock is the place to start: bouldering needs no rope skills, and it runs adult classes as well as children's classes from age 4, from its Minions sessions upwards. Under-5s climb free with a paying member. To learn to use a rope, book a session at Kong or Keswick Climbing Wall, as Penrith's wall is unstaffed.

Climbing outdoors near Carlisle

The nearest crag is Armathwaite, a soft sandstone cliff above the River Eden about 15 km south-east of the city, with more than 160 trad routes, many easy but some very bold slabs and walls. It's covered, with other Eden Valley sandstone and the limestone of south Cumbria, by the Fell and Rock Climbing Club's Eden Valley and South Lakes Limestone guide; these lowland crags often stay dry when the Lake District fells are wet. Sandstone is fragile when damp, so let it dry after rain and extend top-rope slings over the edge. Borrowdale, with crags such as Shepherd's Crag, is under an hour away.
