Istanbul's climbing gyms are mostly bouldering walls, on both sides of the Bosphorus. Boulderhane has around 600 m² of bouldering in the Metrocity mall in Levent, on the European side, while the Asian side has Boulder İstanbul in Kadıköy, DuvarX in Maltepe and Inventist in Çekmeköy, the city's only commercial hall with lead and speed walls.

Boulderhane was founded on İstiklal Avenue in 2002 and has been run by climbers through several homes. At the end of 2024 it moved to the lower floor of the Metrocity shopping centre in Levent, beside Levent metro station. The main hall has around 600 m² of bouldering in named sectors, with about 150 problems on angles of up to 75 degrees and one sector reset every Monday, plus a MoonBoard, a Kilter Board, spray walls and a weights area. A separate 120 m² kids' area has gentler angles and top-outs. It opens from 10:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 20:00 at weekends.
Further up the Bosphorus in Tarabya, the TED sports club has an indoor bouldering room and a 110 m² outdoor wall for lead and top-rope climbing, for members and their guests.
Boulder İstanbul has been running since 2009, in a shopfront gym on Nüzhetefendi Sokak in Rasimpaşa, Kadıköy, a few streets from the Kadıköy ferry pier. It's bouldering only, with around 80 problems on walls of varied angles and about 40 new ones a month, plus hangboards and a café area. There are no showers, but the Aziziye Hamamı is next door. It opens from 12:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and from 12:00 to 20:00 at weekends.
DuvarX, open since 2018 in Küçükyalı, Maltepe, has two 4.5-metre bouldering walls with around 50 problems, a section reset every week, and a MoonBoard, spray wall and campus board. Further east, Inventist Sports Climbing Academy in Çekmeköy, part of a sports academy and hotel founded in 2022, has around 1,530 m² of bouldering, lead and speed walls and a separate children's wall. Experienced climbers can come for the day with their own kit or hire it, but prices and hours aren't published, so contact the academy first. By public transport, take the metro to Çekmeköy or Dudullu, then a taxi.
In Ataşehir, Hupalupa, a family entertainment centre in the Metropol İstanbul mall, has an 8-metre Clip 'n Climb wall with auto-belays for anyone aged four and over; climbing costs ₺500. The federation runs its Istanbul courses on the roped wall in the Kartal multi-purpose sports hall, and Sabancı University's club wall in Tuzla is for its students and staff.
In October 2026 a day pass cost ₺800 at Boulderhane, or ₺650 on weekdays before 14:00, and ₺850 at Boulder İstanbul. Both have student rates, ten-visit passes cost ₺6,500 at each, and shoe hire is ₺230–₺250. DuvarX brought in new prices in September 2026, so check its current list.
Adults can walk into Boulder İstanbul without booking or experience: you sign a consent form and the staff give you a short orientation. It also runs a 45-minute Discovery session with shoes and chalk included, and beginners' courses for adults and for children from age 6. Boulderhane runs a two-session beginner course for groups of four to six and coaching groups for children from age 6, and a parent has to sign its waiver in person for anyone under 18. Inventist's junior academy takes children from age 4, and its performance squads train 7 to 18-year-olds for competitions.
Inventist is Istanbul's competition wall. It hosted the first senior combined Turkish Championship held in Istanbul in March 2024, the Balkan youth bouldering championship in November 2024, which Turkey won as a team, the federation's international open bouldering championship in September 2025 and the lead national-team camp in July 2026. The gyms have run their own competitions too, such as the Boulderhane Triple and DuvarX's summer league. Federation and club walls need a licence, which you get through a club: İstanbul Doğa Sporları runs regular bouldering evenings, crag trips and courses, and Boğaziçi University has its own mountaineering club, BÜDAK.
Ballıkayalar, a limestone canyon in a nature park near Gebze, about an hour's drive east of the city, is considered the birthplace of Turkish rock climbing, and climbers have been coming since the 1970s. Sources put its routes at between 70 and more than 100, from 7 to 35 metres long, and it can be climbed all year. Without a car, take the Marmaray or metro to Gebze, then a minibus or taxi towards Tavşanlı village; the park is about half an hour's walk from the village, and there are tea huts but no restaurants. Further afield, Geyve in Sakarya, two to three hours away, has more than 50 bolted limestone routes, and Gölpazarı in Bilecik is a developing limestone area two and a half to three hours' drive south-east.
Turkey has two climbing systems: walk-in bouldering gyms that anyone can use, and club, university and state walls for licensed climbers. Here's how each works, what it costs and how visitors can climb.
