Roped climbing
The Foundry, on Mowbray Street in Neepsend, is run by The Foundry Mountaineering Club CIC, a not-for-profit BMC associate member that describes itself as run by the members for the members. Anyone can climb there: there are 24 lead lines from f4 to f8b, 22 top-rope lines, seven auto-belays and five bouldering circuits of around 110 to 120 problems. It also hires out bouldering pads for days on the grit.
Awesome Walls Sheffield, on Garter Street in Burngreave, opened in 2013 and was named a National Performance Centre by the BMC. It has more than 250 routes on 105 roped lines, walls up to 17 metres with a long, steep roof, 13 auto-belays and over 120 boulder problems. On 1 October 2026 Awesome Walls announced it had agreed to sell the centre to Depot Climbing, which plans to keep the staff and invest in new walls; it stays open while the paperwork is finalised.
Bouldering centres
The Climbing Works, in the Centenary Works in Woodseats, opened in 2006 and calls itself the UK's original dedicated bouldering wall. It has 11 Fontainebleau-style circuits of 20 to 40 problems, graded from about F2 to F8a and reset weekly, a competition wall, Beastmaker training boards, a separate family centre and a pizza bar. Its smaller sister wall, Broomhill Climbing Works, is in the Broomhill Methodist Centre in west Sheffield, with a MoonBoard and weekly beginner classes.
The Climbing Hangar, on Sutherland Street, resets its big bouldering wall zone by zone every week and has a competition wall modelled on the Tokyo Olympics wall, a Kilter Board, a Tension Board 2 and a gym; shoe hire and group classes are free with entry. Depot Sheffield, on Woodbourn Road, sets colour circuits from beginner level to V8+ beside a spectator-friendly competition wall, with a free 30-minute orientation for newcomers and social nights through the week.
Free boulders in the parks
Sheffield also has more than a dozen free artificial boulders in its parks, documented by the community Sheffield Boulders wiki. The original Heeley boulder in Heeley Millennium Park was the first. Pound's Park in the city centre, opened in April 2023, has a six-tonne boulder sculpted to look like a Peak District gritstone face, and the Broomgrove Road wall is a sheltered, street-lit traverse of artificial gritstone with small, sloping holds. Welcome to Sheffield links them in its Tour de Blocs bike ride.

Outdoors: the Peak on the doorstep
The Peak District's gritstone edges start at the city's western edge. Burbage North has short buttresses of 8 to 15 metres, popular for summer-evening soloing and bouldering, and can be reached by bus from Sheffield. Stanage Popular is, in UKC's words, the most popular section of the most popular crag in the UK, and Froggatt is known for its slabs.
