Inner west and inner south
Gyms cluster most densely in the inner west and inner south. 9 Degrees opened its first gym, 9 Degrees Alexandria, in 2015: it has a MoonBoard and a café and is ten minutes' walk from Mascot station. 9 Degrees Waterloo, near Waterloo Metro, has a Kilter Board and an upstairs gym. NOMAD Annandale has more than 1,000 m² of walls, a 40° spray wall, a yoga studio and a café. BlocHaus runs BlocHaus Marrickville, with 850 m² of walls, a Kilter Board and an upstairs strength gym, and BlocHaus Leichhardt, with two MoonBoards, beside Taverners Hill light rail stop; a day pass at either gets you into both on the same day.
North shore and Northern Beaches
9 Degrees Chatswood opened at the end of 2025, with a MoonBoard, a Tension Board and a spray wall upstairs and more than 60 free parking spaces. NOMAD's second gym, NOMAD Gladesville, opened on Victoria Road in 2024. On the beaches, the independent Skywood Climbing moved from Freshwater to a bigger warehouse in Brookvale, on the B-Line bus route, in February 2026. Climb Fit and Northern Beaches Rockhouse cover roped climbing up here (below).
Western Sydney, Penrith and Campbelltown
9 Degrees Parramatta is in Rydalmere, by the Yallamundi light rail stop. 1UP Bouldering in Chullora welcomes dogs and runs a free beginners' class every second Tuesday, and Beta One in South Granville sets more than 20 new problems a week. Sandbox Bouldering in Silverwater is a training gym built around Kilter, Tension, Grasshopper and MoonBoard system boards and spray walls. Further out, Top Out opened near Leumeah station in July 2026, billing itself as Campbelltown's first bouldering gym, and Climber Collective in Jamisontown, Penrith, is a bouldering gym for climbers aged 16 and over. Climb Oz in Blacktown has closed; the nearest walls to Blacktown are now The Edge in Castle Hill and 9 Degrees Parramatta. For the Central Coast and Wollongong, see our New South Wales page.
Roped climbing
Sydney Indoor Climbing Gym in St Peters opened in 1993 as the state's first indoor climbing gym and bills itself as Australia's biggest, with more than 450 top-rope, lead and bouldering routes on walls up to 16 metres. Its old Villawood branch now trades separately as Elevate Climbing, with about 250 top ropes, 70 of them leadable, and a speed wall. Climb Fit has three roped gyms, each with auto-belays and a fitness gym: St Leonards, with lead roofs and crack climbs; Macquarie Park, five minutes from the Metro; and the biggest, Kirrawee, in the Sutherland Shire. Northern Beaches Rockhouse in Brookvale says it is the only lead climbing gym on the beaches, The Edge in Castle Hill has walls up to 18.5 metres, and at The Climbing Centre in Penrith climbers hold each other's ropes on tall top-rope walls.
University walls
Sydney Uni's The Ledge in Camperdown has top-rope walls up to about 8 metres and opens to everyone on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, for $16 including harness hire; university clubs hold their climbing nights there. UNSW's Village Green Bouldering Wall in Kensington is a free outdoor block, about 3 metres high with some 20 problems, open to the local community as well as students.
Prices and memberships
In October 2026 adult entry cost $26 at most bouldering gyms ($24 for students), plus about $7 to hire shoes; Sandbox ($21), Climber Collective ($24) and Top Out ($25) cost a little less. Roped gyms charge $23 to $26, plus harness hire. At 9 Degrees, NOMAD and 1UP a first visit costs the usual $26 and buys a week of climbing. Ten-visit passes at the bouldering gyms are usually $234, and memberships run from about $130 to $170 a month, many billed weekly at $30 to $38. Memberships at 9 Degrees, NOMAD and Climb Fit work at all of the chain's Sydney gyms, and BlocHaus's All-Haus also covers its gyms in Canberra and Melbourne. Students get cheap nights, such as $16 Tuesdays at Skywood and $15 Wednesday evenings at Northern Beaches Rockhouse.
Beginners and kids
Most gyms take walk-ins once you've signed the online waiver; groups of ten or more should book. Staff give first-timers a safety briefing, and roped gyms teach you to belay on your first visit, sometimes for a few dollars, and assess you before you lead. NOMAD's four-week beginner course ($180) includes a month's membership. 9 Degrees and Climber Collective are aimed at over-16s and most bouldering gyms need an adult with younger children, so families do better at the roped centres: Climb Fit takes children from three, Macquarie Park has a kids' zone with an augmented-reality wall, St Peters has its own kids' area and Northern Beaches Rockhouse has caving tunnels. Most run after-school squads and holiday camps.
Climbing outdoors
The Sydney Rockclimbing Club, founded in 1951, runs day trips to crags around the city, such as the sport routes at Narrabeen Slabs and Alfords Point, the sea cliffs of Rosa Gully, and the beginner-friendly bouldering and top-roping at Lindfield Rocks, a 20-minute walk from Lindfield station. Non-members can come on one trip before joining. The Blue Mountains, about two hours' drive west, are popular with climbers, with cliffs such as Centennial Glen near Blackheath and Mount Piddington near Mount Victoria.
