Bouldering in the city centre

Social Climbing Coventry, formerly The Ballroom Climbing Wall, is on Ironmonger Row, two minutes from West Orchards car park and near Pool Meadow bus station. It has more than 175 problems from V0 to V9+, with sections reset weekly, a MoonBoard with the 2024 hold set, a Tension Board 2 and a weights gym. No booking is needed for a day pass, and free one-hour Foundation and Improvers sessions are included with entry.

Roped climbing at Warwick

The Team Warwick Climbing Centre in the Sports and Wellness Hub at Cryfield Village, on the University of Warwick campus south of the city, is open to the public as well as students. Its walls, upgraded with EP Climbing, reach 15 metres with a 5-metre overhang and carry 45 lines and about 135 climbs, with top rope, lead, auto belays, bouldering and a speed wall. Everyone books an induction on their first visit, with shoes and harness included.

Nearby walls

• The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Centre in Rugby, run by Better, has a 9-metre rock-effect wall with 11 lead and top-rope lines, used for instructed courses, holiday tasters and adult drop-in sessions.
• Social Climbing Solihull on Vulcan Road has another 175-plus problems, a Kilter Board and free parking.
• GreenTowers in Hinckley is a youth centre wall booked for parties and groups rather than open climbing.

There is also a small, free outdoor bouldering wall under the ring road at the Naul's Mill underpark, painted in bright patterns and photographed in 2023, part of the green link from Naul's Mill Park to Belgrade Plaza.

Prices and passes

An adult day pass is £14 at Social Climbing and £12.50 at peak times at Warwick, where off-peak sessions cost £9.50 and juniors £8.50. Warwick's first visit, with the induction and kit, costs £15 at peak times plus a one-off £6 registration, and Social Climbing's online first visit is £15 including registration and shoe hire. Monthly climbing is about £50 at Warwick on a 12-month direct debit and £55 on Social Climbing's flexible plan, which also covers its Leicester and Solihull centres.

Beginners and children

Bouldering is the easy way to start: Social Climbing runs free beginner sessions and a three-week course, and children aged 5 to 15 climb with an adult, one adult to two children, with Kids Club and Social Tots sessions. Warwick runs adult lessons and courses, Bear Cubs and Squads programmes for juniors, NICAS and holiday camps, and under-18s need a parental consent form. In Rugby, children's courses start at four years old.

Outdoor climbing nearby

Warwickshire has little natural rock. The nearest crags are the volcanic outcrops of Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire, where Beacon Hill has about 48 short routes but must be booked with the rangers and is closed from April to August, while the Peak District gritstone at Black Rocks and Stanage is a longer drive north.
