Innisfail, Queensland, Australia
The Fitzgerald Esplanade Boulder Wall is a free outdoor bouldering block in the riverside parkland along Fitzgerald Esplanade in Innisfail, on the lawn between the town's skate park and the public toilets, with the Johnstone River behind the trees. Cassowary Coast Regional Council unveiled it in March 2021 as an initiative of the Queensland Government, built for fun, low-level climbing that suits beginners as well as more experienced climbers.
It's a single sand-coloured artificial boulder, about 2.4 m high and 4.5 m wide. A wider, bulging top sits on a narrower base, so the upper moves pull round overhanging sides, while the lower faces are close to vertical. Coloured holds of many shapes and sizes are bolted across its faces, and soft rubber matting covers the ground beneath it. At this height it suits short problems and traverses rather than long climbs.
As we last found them. Prices change, so check the wall's website before you go.
- No booking or entry fee: it's in a public council park
- Nothing to hire on site
