Bouldering walls
City Bloc opened in 2009 as the first bouldering wall in Leeds, set up by former GB team climbers. It is still independent, and sits in Airedale Works, a former Victorian train foundry on the South Bank about 20 minutes' walk from the station. A dedicated competition wall and training gym were added in 2020, and there is an adjustable Kilter Board, a café and yoga sessions.
The Climbing Lab, on Kirkstall Industrial Park, is a 16,000 sq ft bouldering centre. Its Titan competition wall follows the design used at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and there is a long power tunnel, a top-out boulder you can stand on, a big cave, a MoonBoard, a gym and free workspace in the café.
Last Sun Dance, on Felnex Close in east Leeds, combines bouldering with a full fitness gym, a café-bar serving draught beer and a padel court. In 2024 it hosted the BMC's British Boulder Championships, which brought 120 of Britain's best boulderers to its competition wall.
Depot Armley, on the Maybrook Industrial Estate west of the centre, resets parts of its colour circuits every month to a published calendar, and Depot says it will be extended this winter, adding 70% more climbing space. Depot's original centre, Depot Pudsey in Stanningley, closed on 6 September 2026 for a refurbishment with no end date, and its classes, socials and junior sessions have moved to Armley.
Roped climbing
Big Depot Leeds, on Gelderd Road in Holbeck, is the city's roped centre: over 200 top-rope, lead and auto-belay routes, with around 60 boulders on the mezzanine. Learn to Auto is a one-hour session that signs you off on the auto-belays, Learn to Belay works towards the top-rope competency check, and Learn to Lead is for confident top-ropers. For more choice, The Climbing Hub in Bradford has 16 roped lines, and Live For Today in Harrogate has around 160 top-rope and 90 lead routes.
Prices and passes
In October 2026 an adult day pass cost £12 at City Bloc, £12.50 at The Climbing Lab and Last Sun Dance, and £14 at the Depot centres. Students do well: City Bloc charges £5.50 on weekdays before 16:00, The Climbing Lab £8.50 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Depot £9 on its student days and Last Sun Dance £9.50.
Monthly passes run from £44 at City Bloc (no contract, classes and yoga included) to £45 at Last Sun Dance, £47 at The Climbing Lab and £51 at Depot on a flexible plan, or £44 a month on Depot's 12-month direct debit. A Depot pass covers every Depot centre, including Big Depot for ropes and Depot Sheffield.
Beginners and children
You don't need experience to boulder. City Bloc's Get to Grips induction costs £17 with entry and shoe hire, The Climbing Lab's adult intro session is £15, and Depot runs free inductions. For families, The Climbing Lab sells a £15 pass for one adult and one under-18, Depot Armley runs Depot Play for under-fives and NICAS bouldering levels for older children, and Big Depot runs family inductions on the ropes.
Climbing outdoors near Leeds
Leeds sits on the edge of Yorkshire gritstone country. Almscliff Crag, north of the city towards Harrogate, is the classic local outcrop, with routes and boulder problems going back more than a century. Caley Crags, above Otley, has roadside boulders and a crag a five-minute walk up the path; UKC's logbook advises parking at the Shawfield car parks on East Chevin Road rather than on the A660. Further up Wharfedale, Ilkley's Cow and Calf and Rocky Valley have almost 400 recorded climbs. The Yorkshire Mountaineering Club's Yorkshire Gritstone guidebooks cover all of them. For the wider county, see climbing in West Yorkshire.
