Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia
On Belay Climbing is a roped climbing gym in a large shed at 38 Hutchinson Street, Burleigh Heads, a short drive from exit 87 of the M1 on the Gold Coast. For many years the building was Paramount Adventure Centre. Peter and Emma, who started climbing there in the early 2000s, took the gym over in 2023, then renovated it and rebranded it as On Belay.
Everything here is climbed on a rope: top-rope lines, auto-belays and lead routes, on features such as the roof, a long sustained wall and the rock-like Natural Wall. In 2026 the gym fitted permanent quickdraws, opening up more than 400 metres of lead climbing, and it keeps resetting sections with new holds and volumes. You don't need to book, and there's no time limit on a visit.
Adults can take Learn the Ropes, a two-evening technique course, or the two-evening Learn to Lead course, and ClimbFit training runs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, free for members. Under-12s have the Saturday-morning Monkeys club, climbers aged 12 and over the DYNOs youth club on Monday and Friday afternoons, and day-long programmes run in the Queensland school holidays. Birthday parties come with a host and a private party room.
