Bouldering

Red Goat Climbing Company is an independent bouldering centre on Redeness Street, behind the Morrisons on Foss Islands Retail Park and a short walk from the city walls. It has problems at a range of angles, a cave, a training area with free weights, a pool table and table football, and the Guzzling Goat café-bar serving pizza, coffee and local beer. New or rusty climbers book an induction (£20, with shoe and chalk hire) before their first session.

Freeklime York, on Kettlestring Lane in Clifton Moor on the northern edge of the city, is a bouldering-only centre with more than 200 problems, a competition wall and a dedicated kids' wall. No experience is needed: sign the online waiver, hire shoes and take a ten-minute induction. Its one-hour Give It A Go class suits adult beginners, and membership also covers Freeklime's centres in Huddersfield and Lincoln.

Roped climbing

The climbing wall at Energise Leisure Centre on Cornlands Road in Acomb, run by Better, is the only place in York with roped climbing. It has 13-metre walls for leading, 10-metre top-rope walls, two auto-belays and a 4-metre bouldering wall. To book public sessions you need to be 18 or over, register and pass a belay competency check, held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings; courses and NICAS clubs cover everyone else. Prices

Climbing in York costs a little less than in Leeds or Sheffield. In October 2026 an adult day pass cost £10 at Red Goat, £10.20 for registered climbers at Energise and £10.50 at Freeklime. Freeklime's membership costs £32 a month with no minimum contract, after a £10 joining fee. Red Goat charges £45 a month, or £38 a month on a six-month direct debit, and both sell multi-visit cards: Red Goat's 12-session card (£85) doesn't expire.

Children and families

Freeklime York runs Mini Freeks classes from age four and family day passes from £29.99 for three people, shoes included; children aged 5 to 13 need one adult for every two children. Energise runs NICAS kids' clubs on its roped walls, and Red Goat sells junior memberships from £25 a month.

Climbing outdoors near York

The Vale of York is flat, so the nearest rock is about 40 km west, on the gritstone. Brimham Rocks, the National Trust's moorland outcrops above Nidderdale, has well over a thousand recorded climbs on its strange wind-carved towers, and Almscliff Crag, between Harrogate and Leeds, is one of Yorkshire's most famous outcrops.
