Bouldering in Vienna
Boulderbar opened its first hall on Hannovergasse in Brigittenau in 2012 and now has four in the city: Hannovergasse, Wienerberg (2017), Hauptbahnhof (2020), and Seestadt (2021), by the U2 in Aspern. They share one price list, all have Kilter Boards, and three run free weekly beginners' workshops for anyone aged 14 or over.
Blockfabrik has 1,400 m² with a Kilter Board, a Tension Board and a MoonBoard, and a vegetarian bistro. Boulder Monkeys opened in Landstraße at the end of 2024, with more than 1,500 m², a giant climbable wheel and a TensionBoard. Das Flash, in an old factory warehouse in Brigittenau, opened in August 2025 with what it says is Vienna's largest Kilter Board, two Moon Boards, a Woods Board and a big spray wall.
The Alpenverein Edelweiss runs Edelweiss Walfischgasse, with 1,100 m² on five levels near the State Opera, and Edelweiss Floridsdorf, which opened in September 2026 in Shopping Center Nord. You can climb at either once as a non-member; after that you need to join an alpine club, which you can do at the desk.
The city also has a bouldering wall in its Sport & Fun Halle Leopoldstadt near Praterstern, open to everyone without booking for €4.50.
Climbing on a rope
Kletterhalle Wien, run by the Naturfreunde Wien in Donaustadt, has 4,900 m² of climbing indoors and out, with more than 400 routes on walls up to 16 metres and 13 auto-belays. Climb On Marswiese, on the edge of the Vienna Woods in Hernals, has 2,260 m² of walls up to 16 metres with more than 250 routes, two auto-belays and four bouldering areas.
In the first district, the Alpenverein Austria's Kletterzentrum Austria near Stephansplatz has roped halls 20 and 10 metres high, three auto-belays and a Kilter Board, but no fixed opening hours, so check with the section's office first. Round the corner on Bäckerstraße, the ÖTK-Kletterhalle fills four floors of a building dating from the 13th century, where the Österreichischer Touristenklub has trained climbers since 1927. Visitors climb on top rope only.
From April to October, the Kletteranlage Flakturm in Esterházypark has more than 100 routes and boulders on the side of a Second World War flak tower, now the Haus des Meeres aquarium, with a main wall about 30 metres high and a view over the rooftops.
Three walls are for members only: the Alpenverein Wien's Kraxlerei in Neuwaldegg, a lead hall for members and guest members, the Kletterzentrum Gebirgsverein in Josefstadt, for its section's members, and SPORTUNION Mariahilf's wall in the Sporthalle Mariahilf.
Just outside Vienna
Three big roped halls sit just beyond the city boundary. Kletterzentrum Südwand in Perchtoldsdorf is an Alpenverein lead-climbing centre with 1,200 m² of walls in an 18-metre hall, about 150 routes and four auto-belays. Edelweiss Südstadt, at the federal sports centre in Maria Enzersdorf, also has 18-metre walls and seven auto-belays, and unlike the Edelweiss bouldering halls it's open to non-members at a non-member price. North of the city, the Alpenverein Austria's Kletteranlage Klosterneuburg has walls up to 15 metres indoors and out, five auto-belays and two bouldering areas. North-east of the city, Monkey Factory in Wolkersdorf has 900 m² of rope walls with more than 200 routes, 240 m² of bouldering and ninja and fitness areas, and to the west the Alpenverein Edelweiss has a roped wall in Pressbaum, open on Sunday afternoons. For bouldering, Klettercenter Rotpunkt in Tribuswinkel, near Baden, opens from October to May.
Prices
In October 2026 an adult day ticket cost €13 at Das Flash, €13.40 at Blockfabrik, €13.90 at Boulder Monkeys and €14.50 at the Boulderbar halls and Climb On Marswiese, while Kletterhalle Wien charged €16.70 and the ÖTK €11.90 for up to three hours. Most halls are cheaper early in the day on weekdays, and alpine-club members pay less at the club halls. For regular climbers, Das Flash's subscription started at €70 a month, and Boulderbar's and Blockfabrik's monthly passes cost €110.
Beginners, children and courses
No hall in Vienna asks for a Kletterschein: you register on your first visit and confirm that you can climb and belay safely. If you can't belay yet, start on the boulders or book a taster session or course. Most courses are taught in German, though Kletterzentrum Austria lists a course in English. Children under 14 must climb with an adult, and 14- to 17-year-olds can usually come alone with a parent's signed consent. See what Austrian halls ask of roped climbers for the details.
Competitions
The Vienna Boulder Tour runs through the city's halls each season. Kletterhalle Wien hosted Boulder World Cups up to 2012 and the Open Austrian Para Climbing Championships in June 2026, and the Vienna lead championships take place on 14 November 2026.
Climbing outdoors near Vienna
The closest rock is in Mödling, south of the city, where the Efeufelsen has 44 bolted routes from grade 2 to 10-, a train ride and a walk from the centre. The Peilstein in the Vienna Woods has hundreds of well-bolted routes on smooth limestone, best from spring to autumn, and the south-facing Hohe Wand, with more than 1,500 routes, is often in the sun above the winter fog. Boulderers head for the Hirschwände and Hausstein near Pernitz. See our guide to outdoor climbing in Austria for more.
