Vienna, Austria
Climb On Marswiese, also known as the Kletterhalle Marswiese, is the climbing hall of the Sportzentrum Marswiese in Hernals, on the edge of the Vienna Woods. Hall A opened in 2011 with walls up to 10 m, and Hall B was added in 2014 with walls up to 16 m, giving 2,260 m² of climbing in all. About 1,674 m² of it is roped, with more than 250 routes from slabs to roofs and two auto-belays for climbing without a partner.
Four bouldering areas add about 556 m²: two mostly vertical spray walls at the front that suit beginners and warming up, a larger area with over 60 colour-coded problems from Font 4 to 7c, and 20° and 40° spray walls with new problems in the boulder app, beside a corner for new-school moves. The training area has a campus board, a 45° system wall, hangboards and space for strength and balance work. A filtered ventilation system keeps the air fresh, helped by air from the woods when the weather allows.
No belay certificate is needed: when you register, you sign to confirm you can belay, and if you can't, you need an experienced partner, a taster session or a course. Belay devices and ropes are only lent to people who already know how to use them. The hall runs term-long courses for children from four, young people, families, adults at three levels and seniors, plus private lessons, holiday camps, children's birthdays, climbing therapy and a climbing team, and it has a shop and a hire desk. It's open every day except Good Friday and 24 December.
