Austria's 2026 climbing championships and the season ahead

Who won the 2026 Austrian bouldering, speed and lead titles, the highlights of Austria's international season, and the competitions still to come in the country's halls, from the autumn state championships to the World Climbing Series in Innsbruck in June 2027.

Austria's climbing federation, the Kletterverband Österreich (Austria Climbing), crowned its 2026 national champions between March and April, in three disciplines and three cities. Here are the results, the highlights of the international season so far, and the competitions still to come in Austria's halls this winter and next summer.

The 2026 Austrian championships

Bouldering opened the season at BLOC house in Graz on 6 and 7 March. Katharina Bergmann won the women's title ahead of Jakoba Rauter and Johanna Färber, and Jan-Luca Posch won the men's ahead of Timo Užnik and Nicolai Užnik.

Speed followed in St. Pölten on 18 April. Johanna Nagl won the women's title from Maya Walter and Lisa Dorwekinger, and Lukas Knapp the men's from Lawrence Bogeschdorfer and Lukas Windischer.

Lead was decided on the outdoor wall of KI Kletterzentrum Innsbruck on 25 April. Olympic medallist Jessica Pilz took the women's title, with Mattea Pötzi second and Ines Schwaiger third, while Felix Mader won the men's from Christian Leitner and Georg Parma.

The Open Austrian Para Climbing Championships were held at Kletterhalle Wien on 6 June, and the under-13 titles were climbed in Innsbruck in April (bouldering) and at Kletterhalle Ehrwald on 10 October (lead).

The international season

The biggest event on home ground was the World Climbing Series round in Innsbruck from 16 to 21 June, which the federation says drew 17,000 spectators. In the lead final, in front of about 3,000 fans in KI's open-air arena, Jakob Schubert finished third and Pilz sixth, and three young Austrians reached their first World Cup semi-finals.

Since then:

  • Anika Deubler became U19 world champion in July.
  • Kevin Amon and Lukas Windischer won bronze in the speed relay in Guiyang in September, and Amon set a new Austrian speed record in Chongqing a few days later.
  • Christian Leitner won silver at the European youth championships in Augsburg.
  • Outside competition, Schubert repeated DNA in the Verdon in October, becoming the first climber to have climbed two routes graded 9c.

Still to come in 2026

The autumn is busy with state championships and club competitions, many of them open to hobby climbers. On the federation's calendar in October 2026:

The world championships follow in Brno, just over the Czech border, from 13 to 22 August 2027, and the European Games in Istanbul run from 16 to 27 June.

AdviceAustria

Do you need a Kletterschein to climb in Austria?

Austria's Alpine Club issues Kletterschein belay cards, but almost none of the halls we list asks to see one. Here's what they ask of roped climbers instead, from signed declarations and staff checks to membership rules and children's consent forms.
