Kletterhalle Villach

Kletterhalle Villach, near Villach Westbahnhof, has around 2,000 m² of climbing, with about 200 roped routes and 80 boulders, and the Alpenverein Villach is one of its partners. The lead and speed area has walls from 10 to 16.5 metres, overhangs of up to nine metres, two speed lanes and three auto-belays, the top-rope area two more auto-belays, and there's a 320 m² outdoor wall 16.5 metres high. Three bouldering areas include a training room with a MoonBoard and a campus board, and there's a children's area and the hall's own restaurant. A taster session each week introduces rope climbing to anyone aged seven or over.

Bouldering

VOLUME, on Lehmgrubenweg, opened in 2021 and has 1,000 m² of bouldering walls plus a 120 m² spray wall, a Kilter Board with a kickboard, a campus board and a training area. Problems run from 4a to 8c in six colour-coded bands, and part of the hall is reset every Tuesday. Its club, the Boulderverein VOLUME, runs the Boulderbash, a series of fun competitions with three cups a year and a final in December.

The Naturfreunde Boulderhalle Villach, in the youth and family guesthouse on St. Martiner Straße, has 240 m² of bouldering on walls up to 4.5 metres, including a tower you can climb on all sides, with moderate problems for easy and technical climbing. It's open every day from 08:00 to 21:00, with tickets sold online or at the guesthouse reception.

Around Villach

The Naturfreunde Dobratsch's Kletterhalle Arnoldstein, 13 km south-west in a school gym, has about 180 m² of roped walls up to 7.5 metres, with around 30 routes from 4 to 7b, and opens on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday evenings from mid-October to April. Near the Millstätter See, Boulder Box Radenthein, 24 km north in the Nockhalle, is an unstaffed 160 m² bouldering room open daily from 08:00 to 22:00 with online tickets, and the Alpenverein has a small bouldering area in Feldkirchen's sports hall. In the Rosental, the Bouldergarage in St. Johann is a club bouldering hall.

In the Gailtal, Kletterhalle St. Stefan im Gailtal is the Naturfreunde's roped wall in the village school's gym, open on Friday evenings from October to April. Further afield, Kletterhalle Mühldorf in the Mölltal has 1,250 m² of climbing on 16-metre walls with five auto-belays, and KLE-SCH in St. Daniel im Gailtal has 18-metre walls with eight auto-belays, a hydraulic Kilter Board and an outdoor wall with a speed route. A new bouldering hall at a school in Spittal an der Drau was due to open in autumn 2026.

Prices

In October 2026 an adult day ticket cost €18.50 at Kletterhalle Villach, or €12 for bouldering only, with lower prices for Alpenverein members, students and half days. VOLUME charged €15, or €13.50 before 16:00 on weekdays, the Naturfreunde hall €8, Arnoldstein €7.50, Radenthein €7 and St. Stefan €6.

Beginners, children and belaying

No hall in Villach asks for a Kletterschein. Kletterhalle Villach's taster session is the easiest way to start roped climbing, and its follow-on courses are for people who've done a top-rope course. At the Naturfreunde hall, children under 14 must come with an adult, 14- to 17-year-olds need a parent's signed consent, and climbing barefoot or with loose chalk isn't allowed. Climbing outdoors near Villach

The Kanzianiberg in Finkenstein, by the Faaker See, was developed in the 1970s as Carinthia's first climbing garden. Its limestone conglomerate face is more than 700 metres long and up to about 60 metres high, with around 500 routes, mostly facing south to south-west, so it dries quickly; the shady Prasvale gorges are for summer days. It's in a water-protection area, so park only beside the road and use the toilets. In winter, the ice-climbing garden at the Villacher Alpen Arena, in an old quarry on the Dobratsch road, is free, floodlit in the evenings and top-rope only. On the lakes, the Peterlewand above the Ossiacher See combines a crag with via ferratas, and at the Jungfernsprung on the Millstätter See you belay from floating platforms in the water. See our guide to outdoor climbing in Austria, and our Klagenfurt page for the halls 35 km east.

Do you need a Kletterschein to climb in Austria?

Austria's Alpine Club issues Kletterschein belay cards, but almost none of the halls we list asks to see one. Here's what they ask of roped climbers instead, from signed declarations and staff checks to membership rules and children's consent forms.
