Bouldering: Newton Kapfenberg
Newton Kapfenberg, on Grazer Straße, opened in 2022 as the second hall of Graz's Newton. Its 950 m² are all on one level, with a big central block whose steep side tests stamina and power, and parts of the hall are reset every Wednesday, with holds swapped regularly with the Graz hall. There's a Kilter Board that tilts from 30 to 70 degrees, a campus board and hangboards, and the café serves pizzas and toasties. Passes and prices are the same as in Graz, and subscribers can let themselves in from 06:00. The hall hosts the final of the Le Mur Cup, a bouldering series it shares with BlocSpot in Zeltweg and Fläsh in Wolfsberg, and the Styrian open bouldering championships on 12 December 2026.
Roped climbing
Bruck's Tower of Power, the hall of the Alpinschule Nolimit mountaineering school, was one of the first modern climbing halls in Austria. It has about 400 m² of walls up to 17.5 metres, shaped like popular sport-climbing crags, with around 50 routes from UIAA 4 to 10 and a small bouldering area. It opens on weekday evenings, and the school asks you to phone ahead; its courses run from supervised climbing for children to courses that get adult beginners climbing on their own.
Kletterakademie Mitterdorf, 25 km up the Mürz valley in the Sport- und Funpark Mürztal, is the region's big centre. It has about 2,800 m² of climbing: indoor walls with up to 19 metres of climbing, a 16-metre outdoor wall floodlit until 21:00, 385 m² of bouldering, a standard speed wall, a Kilter Board and auto-belays, with two fun walls for children. Only semi-automatic belay devices such as a Grigri are allowed, and lead ropes must be at least 60 metres long. It hosts the Styrian open lead championships on 29 November 2026.
South of Bruck, the Alpenverein's hall in Mixnitz, in the Naturwelten Steiermark building, has a 9.5-metre lead wall with a crack and a MoonBoard, with an open session on Monday evenings.
Leoben
Leoben's bouldering hall, boulderpoint, closed its old hall on Kärntnerstraße in May 2026 and is moving to a new building at the Prettachfeld, with more than 700 m² of walls, an indoor playground and a café. It expects to open in late autumn 2026, subject to permits; until then, the halls in Kapfenberg and Bruck are 15 km away.
Prices
In October 2026 an adult day ticket cost €20 at Kletterakademie Mitterdorf (€15 from 14:00 and €13 in the morning), €13.90 at Newton (€12.40 before 14:00), €10 at the Tower of Power and €7 in Mixnitz. Alpine-club members pay less at the Tower of Power, and students and children pay less everywhere. Read what Austrian halls ask of roped climbers before your first visit.
Climbing outdoors nearby
South of Bruck, the limestone walls of the Grazer Bergland include the Röthelstein above Mixnitz, reached by train and a walk. It faces south and gets very hot in summer. The Franz-Scheikl via ferrata climbs the north face of the Hochlantsch. See our Graz page for the halls and crags around the city, about 50 km away, and our guide to outdoor climbing in Austria.
