Climbing Walls in the Salzkammergut

The Salzkammergut has climbing halls all around its lakes. Bad Ischl has two, the Naturfreunde's K3 with almost 1,200 m² of walls and the Alpenverein's 14.5-metre hall by the Katrin cable car, Gmunden has the Stoablock bouldering hall in an old brewery, and Vöcklabruck's Delta Sportpark has seven auto-belays. Smaller halls in Obertraun, Vorchdorf, St. Georgen im Attergau and Mondsee, and the via ferratas above the lakes, fill in the rest.

Bad Ischl

K3 Kletterhalle Bad Ischl, the Naturfreunde's hall in the K3 sports centre, has almost 1,200 m² of Walltopia walls from slabs to steep roofs, with more than 90 routes up to French 8a, auto-belays, fixed top-ropes on some easier routes and a separate bouldering area with more than 90 problems. It's staffed in the afternoons and at weekends, but card holders and anyone with an online day ticket can climb around the clock.

Across town, the Alpenverein's Katrin Kletterhalle, beside the valley station of the Katrin cable car, packs a 340 m² wall with about 55 routes into a room 14.5 metres high, with three auto-belays, holds for dry-tooling and a 135-metre via ferrata that runs from the stairwell out onto the front of the building. It isn't staffed and runs on trust, every day of the year.

Gmunden and the Traunsee

Stoablock opened in 2022 in the old bottling hall of the Gmundner Bier brewery, with more than 700 m² of bouldering on six walls, reset every week, a competition wall, a Kilterboard, a children's area and the traunstoa café-bistro. North of the lake, the outdoor Kletterwand Laakirchen in the town's Sportpark has about 35 routes up to 12 metres and is open to everyone at any time.

Vöcklabruck and the Attersee

The Delta Sportpark in Vöcklabruck opened in 2004 as the biggest hall in Upper Austria at the time. It has more than 1,000 m² of walls with over 250 routes and boulders, seven auto-belays, a MoonBoard and a play wall for children, and opens at 06:00 on weekdays. West of the Attersee, Kletterhalle Freizi St. Georgen, in the Freizi leisure centre in St. Georgen im Attergau, opened in 2019 with about 300 m² of roped walls, four auto-belays and 400 m² of bouldering. The Alpenverein in Schörfling and the Naturfreunde in Lenzing have club walls for their members, the Alpenverein's clubhouse wall in Schwanenstadt holds sessions on Monday and Wednesday evenings, and in Mondsee, Kletterhalle Mondsee has 1,280 m² of climbing in a fitness club, with views of the Drachenwand.

Inner Salzkammergut and Vorchdorf

In Obertraun, below the Dachstein, the climbing hall at the national sports centre has about 450 m² of indoor and outdoor walls up to 14 metres, two auto-belays and a bouldering area with two natural boulders. It's open to the public on weekdays, and at weekends if you phone by Friday afternoon. To the north-east, the Naturfreunde's Kletterhalle Vorchdorf is unstaffed and open around the clock with an online door code, with a floodlit 14-metre outdoor tower.

Climbing outdoors in the Salzkammergut

Above the Wolfgangsee at St. Gilgen, the Plombergstein has more than 100 routes from 2- to 10+, including a sector for children and beginners with closely spaced bolts. The region is also known for via ferratas: the Katrin-Klettersteig above Bad Ischl climbs about 150 metres, reached by the cable car, and there are more on the Krippenstein, on the Feuerkogel and above Mondsee. See our Salzburg page for the halls around the city, and our guide to outdoor climbing in Austria.

Do you need a Kletterschein to climb in Austria?

Austria's Alpine Club issues Kletterschein belay cards, but almost none of the halls we list asks to see one. Here's what they ask of roped climbers instead, from signed declarations and staff checks to membership rules and children's consent forms.
