Maria Enzersdorf, Lower Austria, Austria
Edelweiss Südstadt is the Alpenverein Edelweiss section's roped climbing hall at the Bundessport- und Freizeitzentrum (BSFZ) Südstadt in Maria Enzersdorf, just south of Vienna. It has around 1,400 m² of climbing indoors and outdoors. The indoor rope walls are 18 metres high, among the tallest in and around Vienna, with more than 100 routes from UIAA III to IX (French 3 to 7c) for top-rope and lead climbing, seven auto-belays for climbing without a partner, and a bouldering area. The section has refitted the hall with 550 new quickdraws, more than 7,000 new holds and new mats.
The hall is open to everyone, alpine-club members or not, daily from 10:00 to 21:00, including public holidays. Register before your first visit, ideally online; day tickets bought online are cheaper. Roped climbers need a partner trained in belaying and must know how to belay themselves, so beginners are pointed to a taster session or a basic course. Under-14s climb only with a registered adult supervisor; 14 to 17-year-olds can climb alone with a registered supervisor's consent. Everything for roped climbing can be hired at the check-in, which also sells drinks, snacks and hot food. There's a climbing shop, air conditioning, wifi and free parking, and climbers can use the BSFZ's strength and cardio area for a small fee.
The section runs courses for adults, children, young people and families (for alpine-club members), taster sessions, one-to-one training, an inclusive climbing group and climbing physiotherapy, and hosts groups, school classes and children's birthdays. Bus 270 from Wien Siebenhirten (U6) and the Badner Bahn both stop at Maria Enzersdorf Südstadt; drivers leave the A2 at Mödling.
