Climbing Walls and Bouldering Gyms in Melbourne

Melbourne has around thirty climbing walls, and most are for bouldering: gyms run by chains such as Northside Boulders, Boulder Lab, Urban Climb and BlocHaus, independents from Altona to Glen Waverley, and free outdoor walls under freeways and in council parks. For roped climbing, Hardrock in the CBD, Cliffhanger, Gravity Worx, Urban Climb Blackburn and Bayside Rock have tall top-rope and lead walls.

Bouldering in the inner north

The Lactic Factory in Abbotsford, climbing since 2006, calls itself the city's first bouldering gym and is now run by Northside Boulders, alongside Northside Boulders Brunswick, rebuilt with 4.5-metre walls in 2025, and Northside Boulders Northcote, home to the group's yoga studio; one membership covers all three. Boulder Lab Brunswick on Barkly Street has about 865 m² of Walltopia walls, Urban Climb Collingwood is a 13+ gym with a Kilter Board and a yoga studio, and The Crux in Coburg North has a Grasshopper board and a café.

The inner south and the west

South of the river, BlocHaus Port Melbourne has about 850 m² of walls, a MoonBoard and FamilyHaus, an area for under-12s, while UP Climbing, a family-run gym beside Balaclava station, has Australia's first Decoy Board. In the west, Rocket Climbing in Footscray has two MoonBoards and a Kilter Board and runs its Fight or Flight competition every November, and Climb West Melbourne in Altona opened in 2020 as the west's first bouldering gym.

The eastern and south-eastern suburbs

Boulder Lab started in the outer east: Boulder Lab Ferntree Gully, its first gym, has a competition wall nearly 37 metres long, and Boulder Lab Clayton in Clayton South has Kinder Lab for children from five. Memberships and 10-visit passes work at every Boulder Lab, and a fourth is due in Heidelberg in early 2027. Independents fill the gaps: OnSight Climbing in Glen Waverley, known for technical, outdoor-style setting; La Roca Boulders in Oakleigh South, whose spray-wall annex members can use around the clock; and Flow Climbing in Cheltenham, for climbers aged 10 and over.

Roped climbing

A handful of centres have top-rope and lead walls. Hardrock Melbourne CBD on Franklin Street is all ropes, up to 16 metres, with four auto-belays; Hardrock's original Nunawading gym closed in December 2025. Cliffhanger in Altona North, open since 1993, has what it calls Australia's tallest indoor wall, at 19 metres. Gravity Worx in Pascoe Vale has 15 auto-belays and a 15-metre IFSC speed wall used for Sport Climbing Victoria's speed competitions, and Urban Climb Blackburn, a 2,800 m² warehouse, has 17-metre walls, a speed wall and a bouldering hall. Bayside Rock in Carrum Downs, near Frankston, pairs 11-metre roped walls with bouldering and a Kilter Board. Leaders are assessed before they lead, and Hardrock, Cliffhanger, Urban Climb and Bayside Rock run learn-to-lead courses.

Free public walls

The free outdoor walls have no staff or gear hire, so bring shoes, chalk and someone to spot you. The best known is Burnley Bouldering Wall, three walls under the Monash Freeway by the Yarra that volunteers and the Victorian Climbing Club look after. Footscray Bouldering Wall, under the Hopkins Street bridge, has had lights since 2025. Brunswick has two council walls, Wilson Avenue off Sydney Road and Yubup Park, and there are more at Fishermans Bend under the West Gate Freeway in Southbank, Holmesglen in Chadstone, Saltwater Reserve in Point Cook and Edgar Avenue Reserve in Cranbourne South. Anyone can use the Monash Peninsula Bouldering Wall outside Monash Sport's entrance on Monash University's Frankston campus. Our guide to Melbourne's free bouldering walls covers each one.

Kids, families and first-timers

Clip 'n Climb Williamstown takes climbers from age 3 on auto-belayed challenge walls, Clip 'n Climb Berwick adds an 11-metre high-ropes course, and Social Fair Coburg has a 26-challenge climbing arena for ages 4 and up. Bayside Rock's Climb Time area, FamilyHaus and Kinder Lab also cater for under-12s, and Cliffhanger and Gravity Worx let young children climb on ropes if someone 13 or older belays. Check age rules: Urban Climb Collingwood and UP Climbing are 13+, and La Roca is 16+. Most gyms take walk-ins after an online waiver and an induction. For coaching, try Northside Brunswick's Saturday Fundamentals hour (16+, free with entry), BlocHaus's Monday beginners' session or Hardrock's $130 beginners' course. Many gyms also run women's nights, ClimbingQTs meet-ups and low-sensory sessions.

Prices and passes

In October 2026 an adult casual entry to a bouldering gym costs $22 to $26, from Boulder Lab and Flow at $22 to Urban Climb and BlocHaus at $26, and OnSight is cheaper from Monday to Thursday. Shoe hire is usually $7. The roped centres charge $23 to $26, plus $5 to $7 for a harness. Memberships are mostly billed weekly, at about $29 to $39 a week (roughly $125 to $170 a month), and most gyms have a first-timer deal, such as Northside's two-week trial for $39 or Urban Climb's two free weeks after a first visit. Students pay less almost everywhere, with $15 Concession Fridays at The Crux and $17 Textbook Tuesdays at BlocHaus.

Climbing outdoors near Melbourne

The You Yangs, granite hills Parks Victoria puts about an hour from the city, have climbing sites at Big Rock and Gravel Pit Tor. In Werribee Gorge State Park, west of Bacchus Marsh, climbing is allowed only at Falcons Lookout, a small east-facing cliff. The Victorian Climbing Club runs members' trips to both, and to Dyurrite (Mount Arapiles) usually on the last weekend of each month. Check access before you go further afield: a plan approved in October 2026 closed about 80 Arapiles routes, and in the Grampians (Gariwerd) you may climb only in designated areas. Our Victoria page covers the state's crags, and the Australia page the rest of the country.
