Hangdog Climbing Gym, Coniston
Hangdog, on Auburn Street, was built by a local climber in 1994 and is still run by climbers. The main hall has more than 150 climbs on walls up to 10 metres, with top ropes, eight auto-belays and caves built into the walls. First-timers get a safety briefing, and children under 12 need an adult to belay them. Upstairs, a quieter mezzanine holds the bouldering and training area, with two MoonBoards and a spray wall, all included in entry. The Recovery Cave, an infrared sauna and an ice bath, is included in membership or $35 an hour.
A day pass is $28.50 ($23.50 under 12) and a 10-visit pass $255; harness hire is $5 and shoes $7. Uni Night costs $20 with a harness, and a Mates Pass gets four people in, with harnesses, for $89. Membership is billed weekly at $29, with an eight-week minimum, and includes gear hire; a 30-day intro trial costs $89.
Dynomite: North Wollongong and Albion Park
Dynomite North Wollongong opened on Montague Street in 2017 with walls built by Walltopia, reset every Tuesday, plus a spray wall, a Tension Board and a training mezzanine. North Wollongong and Fairy Meadow stations are under 15 minutes' walk away, and the free Gong Shuttle stops nearby.
Dynomite Albion Park followed in early 2024, in a big warehouse at Albion Park Rail within walking distance of Albion Park station. Its walls and freestanding boulders are reset on Thursdays, and it adds six auto-belays, a Tension Board 2, an interactive Valo wall and a Monday yoga class that is free for members.
Both gyms charge $25 a day ($23 concession and under 18, $20 for children 10 and under) and $7 for shoes. First-timers can get three visits in 30 days, with shoe hire, for $59. A 30-day pass for both gyms costs $149, or $35 a week by direct debit; a single-gym membership is $28 a week on a 12-month contract.
Beginners, kids and students
Hangdog runs Kids Learn to Climb terms after school ($249, half price for members' children), a six-week Next Grade course for adults climbing around grades 20 to 25 ($330) and private coaching. At Dynomite, children aged 6 to 15 climb with an adult actively supervising, and under-sixes may climb only at Albion Park. Students pay $20 with shoe hire on Wednesday evenings at North Wollongong and on term-time Mondays at Albion Park, and the University of Wollongong Rock Climbing Club holds nights at Hangdog.
Climbing outdoors in the Illawarra
Many of the escarpment crags are in the Illawarra Escarpment State Conservation Area, whose 2023 plan of management allows climbing only on the west- and south-facing cliffs of Mount Keira and on cliffs north of Bulli Pass, in roped parties of up to eight, with new bolts only by NPWS consent. Mount Keira's West Face, a short walk along the Dave Walsh Track from the summit park, has the most popular and accessible routes, many of them easier and shorter. Stanwell Tops, above Stanwell Park, is mostly sport climbing on ringbolts, and Bass Point, a headland reserve near Shell Cove, has easy to moderate coastal bouldering.
Further south, Nowra is known for steep, bolted sport climbing, and Hangdog runs guided top-rope days at Thompson's Point there for $220, best for climbers who can manage about grade 18 indoors.
