About Boulder Lab Ferntree Gully

Boulder Lab Ferntree Gully is a bouldering gym at 8/1821 Ferntree Gully Road, in Melbourne's outer east. It was Boulder Lab's first gym, opening in early 2020, and the group has since added Clayton and Brunswick, with Heidelberg due in early 2027. Memberships and 10-visit passes work at every Boulder Lab.

The climbing

The gym has about 700 square metres of walls, designed in house with Concept Climbing, covering every angle from slab to roof, with big freestanding boulders over white matting. Its Comp Wall, built to World Cup specifications, runs for nearly 37 metres. Problems carry Boulder Lab's numbered grade tags and are reset twice a week. The training area has a 3.6 by 4.8 metre timber Concept board, a 4.1 metre spray wall, a campus board and hangboards, and the mezzanine upstairs has a warm-up area with weights, rowers and spin bikes for over-16s.

Competitions and sessions

  • Lab Masters, Boulder Lab's yearly competition, was held here on 17 October 2026, and the gym hosted the 2025 Victorian State Boulder Titles
  • Women's Night on alternate Thursdays from 6pm, alternating with Clayton
  • A low-sensory morning on Tuesdays from 8am to 10am, with no music and natural light only
  • Youth Squad and Development Squad on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in school term
  • Private coaching for one to three climbers

There is a café counter, lounge space, changing rooms with showers and lockers, and a shop with Boulder Lab's best-selling gear. The gym is for climbers aged 12 and over, and 12 and 13 year olds need a supervising parent. First-timers sign a waiver, watch a safety video and are inducted, with the last induction an hour before closing. Dogs on a lead are welcome off the mats.

- 6-month contract: $29.50 a week; 12-month contract: $27.50 a week (each plus the $39 joining fee; early exit fees apply)

- Members climb at every Boulder Lab gym and get a free guest pass each month, 10% off the gear store and 40% off gear hire

    A session for women and non-binary climbers led by the women's night coaches: about 45 minutes on a technique or skill, then 45 minutes of projecting and climbing together. First-timers are welcome and no booking is needed.
