Climb West Melbourne is an independent bouldering gym in a big blue and pink warehouse on Maidstone Street in Altona, close to Altona Beach. It opened in 2020 as the first dedicated bouldering gym in Melbourne's west, and Hobsons Bay City Council lists it as a rainbow-owned, rainbow-friendly business. The focus is a beginner-friendly, inclusive community, summed up in its motto, stronger together.
The gym's own setting team keeps the walls stocked with problems for every level, tagged by colour from yellow (easiest) through blue, purple, green, pink, red and black to white, with orange wild climbs that can be any grade. The training walls include a Kilter Board and a campus board, and there is a small gym area plus a studio that is hired out for yoga, dance and fitness classes. Changing rooms with showers, a lounge with board games and books, and Jimmy, the coffee van serving coffee, toasties, bagels and smoothies, make it easy to stay for hours. Dogs on a short lead are welcome as long as they keep off the mats, and an in-house physiotherapist takes bookings.

“Amazing vibe, and great classes for kids. The staff are so welcoming, the other patrons are supportive, and the coaches that run the kids' sessions are knowledgeable and creative…”
“Great gym with really nice people and fun and varied setting. The changing rooms, toilets and showers were super clean too. Just a bit out of the way but doable by train even for those without a car.”
“Good climbs for beginners and experienced climbers … fairly spacious and rarely too crowded … Gym area could have more equipment but otherwise it’s perfect.”
