The Crux is a bouldering gym on Louvain Street in Coburg North, about 8 km north of Melbourne's CBD. There are no ropes or harnesses: its Olympic-height walls run from steep overhangs to technical slabs, and the setters put up more than 20 new problems a week over two resets. Grades are shown by a coloured tag on the start holds, from yellow (easiest) through blue, purple, green, orange, red and black to white, roughly V1 to V8, while multicoloured "wildcard" tags keep their grade hidden. Every problem finishes on a tagged hold, so there are no top-outs.
There is no need to book: staff give first-timers a short safety induction at the counter, and the waiver and safety video can be done online beforehand. Climbers must be at least 6, and under-16s need an adult with them on the mats. Dogs on a lead are welcome. The gym runs term-time youth squads, school holiday mornings and a low-sensory session on the last Saturday of the month, and hosts school groups and corporate team-building days. Louvain Street is one-way, so drive in from Charles Street.

“The best first experience of bouldering possible. The staff were lovely, the area was calming, and the community of climbers were helpful and non-judgemental.”
“The $50 first cover's deal is so worth it, if you are just getting into bouldering, make sure to do this and save some bucks. … The weekends are pretty crowded though.”
“Amazing well-rounded gym, has everything needed to train and have a good time. … Only downside is that it gets a bit hot and stuffy in the summer, especially in the back of the gym.”
