Northern Beaches Rockhouse is an independent indoor climbing centre in the Winbourne Estate business park in Brookvale, on Sydney's Northern Beaches, right next door to the 4 Pines brewery. It is above all a roped gym: the centre counts 92 top-rope routes spread over 37 walls and resets routes every week, and it says it is the only gym on the Northern Beaches with lead climbing. A bouldering wall with seven grade bands gets a new set every fortnight, and routes are graded on the Ewbank scale.
Groups of fewer than ten don't need to book: fill in the online waiver and turn up. Staff show newcomers how to belay, belayers must be at least 13, and children can usually start climbing from about four or five. The centre runs Kids Club, Youth Group, Youth Squads and a school holiday programme, plus three-week introduction and lead climbing courses for adults. A Monthly Mingle on the first Tuesday of each month helps climbers find partners, and a mothers' group meets on Thursday mornings.
