9 Degrees is closing its Lane Cove bouldering gym on Friday 13 November 2026, after eight years, because its landlord is taking the space back. Passes and memberships carry over to its gyms in Chatswood, Parramatta, Waterloo and Alexandria.
9 Degrees will close its bouldering gym in Lane Cove West, on Sydney's north shore, on Friday 13 November 2026. The gym, in a warehouse unit at 1a/21 Mars Road, has been open for eight years. 9 Degrees announced the closure on its website and on Instagram on 6 October 2026, saying it was "not something we ever wanted to write".
Why it's closing
The lease has come to an end and the landlord won't renew it. 9 Degrees says its landlord and next-door neighbour has outgrown its own warehouse and will expand into the gym's space: the growing stack of pallets that regulars will know from the front door is the neighbour's overflow stock. 9 Degrees says it tried to find a way to stay in Lane Cove, but the landlord was firm.
It also says the closure has nothing to do with its newer gym in Chatswood. The landlord's decision came after Chatswood had opened, and the two gyms were never meant to replace each other. 9 Degrees has no plans to replace Lane Cove directly, though it says it is always looking for new sites.
The last day
Friday 13 November is the last day of trading. That evening, before the roller door comes down for the last time, 9 Degrees will hold a farewell at the gym with speeches, food and drinks and a final reset of the boulders, which it hints may include a full traverse of the roof. It says details will follow on its social media in the weeks before.
The Lane Cove staff will move to 9 Degrees' other gyms, mostly Chatswood, so regulars will still see them around.
Memberships, passes and gift cards
Prepaid memberships and 10-visit passes are valid at every 9 Degrees gym, so nothing needs doing.
Direct-debit memberships billed through Lane Cove will need updating after the closure: members will be asked to do it at the front desk of the next 9 Degrees gym they visit, which 9 Degrees says takes a few moments.
Gift cards can still be used online and at the other gyms.
In October 2026 entry at 9 Degrees cost $26 ($24 for students), a 10-visit pass $234 and a rolling membership $160 a month with no lock-in contract. 9 Degrees asks members with questions to email lanecove@9degrees.com.au.
Where Lane Cove's climbers can go instead
9 Degrees has four other gyms in Sydney. In order of driving distance from Lane Cove, as 9 Degrees gives them:
9 Degrees Chatswood (8.9 km), off Eastern Valley Way, opened at the end of 2025. It has timber walls, a MoonBoard, a Tension Board and a spray wall upstairs and more than 60 free parking spaces, and on 14 and 15 November, straight after Lane Cove's last day, it hosts Sport Climbing NSW's 2026 NSW Open Boulder Titles.
9 Degrees Parramatta (15 km), in Rydalmere, opened in 2017 and has a MoonBoard in its training area and free parking.
9 Degrees Waterloo (18 km), on Danks Street near Waterloo Metro, has a Kilter Board and an upstairs gym, and runs most of 9 Degrees' classes.
9 Degrees Alexandria (18 km), the first 9 Degrees gym, opened in 2015 and has a MoonBoard and a café.
Climbers who don't need to keep a 9 Degrees membership have closer options. Climb Fit Macquarie and Climb Fit St Leonards have roped climbing as well as bouldering, and NOMAD Gladesville is a bouldering gym on Victoria Road; each is within about 4 km of Mars Road in a straight line. Every wall in the city is on our guide to climbing in Sydney.
Ipswich, Gympie and Campbelltown got their first bouldering gyms in 2026, Rocky Climb opened in Rockhampton and Geelong's Industry Boulders expanded. Three Melbourne gyms are on the way, and two long-running gyms close in November.
The Rock Adventure Centre in Newtown, Geelong's indoor climbing centre since 2001, closes for good on Saturday 7 November 2026. Here's what is ending and where the city's climbers can go next, from Industry Boulders in Grovedale to the granite of the You Yangs.
Since August 2024 Adelaide has gained three bouldering gyms: Urban Climb in a former Hindley Street cinema, a new Beyond Bouldering gym in Thebarton and Laneway Boulders in Stepney, and Adelaide's Bouldering Club has moved to Urban Climb. Here's what opened when, and what each offers.
