Columbia, Maryland, United States
Movement Columbia stands where the first Earth Treks gym opened in 1997, in the same building on Columbia Gateway Drive. About 20 years later the gym was rebuilt and quadrupled in size, and it now trades under the Movement name. The gym calls the result Columbia 2.0, with what it describes as the largest bouldering area in Maryland and plenty of space to hang out between climbs.
Its climbing page lists 26,000 sq ft of climbing, with about 187 roped routes on walls up to 40 ft and around 128 boulder problems. Both top-rope and lead climbing are on offer, with bookable lead checks, and the training area has a hydraulic system board, campus boards and hangboards. New climbs are posted on the Kaya app, and the setting schedule comes out every two weeks.
Beginners can take Introduction to Rope Climbing or Introduction to Bouldering, both free for members, then Intro to Technique, Learn to Lead, intermediate technique clinics and an outdoor sport-climbing skills class. There are after-school programmes, Kids Climb Time sessions for 6 to 12-year-olds, school-break camps, youth teams, private coaching and an adult Peak Performance Team. A yoga studio, a strength and cardio area, group fitness classes, locker rooms with showers and a gear shop complete the facilities.
The calendar is full of community meet-ups: a women's bouldering night, the Ladies Climbing Coalition, Stonewall Climbing for LGBTQ+ climbers, Escala for Hispanic and Latine climbers, DMV Muslims Climb, Partner Project nights for finding climbing partners and weekly sessions with Up ENDing Parkinson's.

“I’ve been a member for the past 5 years and have had a wonderful experience. The staff are all friendly and helpful and the gym is clean and well maintained. My kids love climbing at Movement too!”
“Was told I can’t climb any walls because I didn’t have anyone to belay me. The employees were nice so I just stayed and bouldered.”
