Sheffield's urban boulders
Sheffield has more free boulders than anywhere else we list, scattered through its parks: Cemetery Road, the original Heeley boulder and its Sheaf neighbour, Darnall, the Ponderosa, St Mary's, Richmond Park, Green Oak Park, Pound's Park in the city centre and the Broomgrove Road wall. Local climbers keep problem lists for each on the Sheffield Urban Bouldering wiki.
London
In Hackney, Shoreditch Park and Mabley Green both have council boulders, and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has a climbing wall among its playgrounds. Further east, Fairlop Waters has a boulder park in its country park.
Elsewhere in Britain
Belgium and Canada
Open Gym Leuven is a free outdoor bouldering and training spot. In Canada, Cowboys Park in Calgary has three climbing boulders, and Quebec has OnSite urban boulders in Montréal's Parc des Hirondelles, Place Jean-Béliveau in Québec City and Jonquière.
What to bring
There are no staff, hire or opening hours to plan around. Bring climbing shoes and chalk, and a crash pad for the taller boulders: some sit over rubber or wood chip, others over grass or hard ground. Brush holds you've chalked, give way to children on boulders in playgrounds, and avoid climbing when the rock is wet, as the concrete gets slippery.
