Perth, Western Australia, Australia
Scarborough Rock Climbing Wall is a free outdoor bouldering wall on The Esplanade at Scarborough Beach, in the Snake Pit, the City of Stirling's skate and BMX facility on the foreshore. The Snake Pit is named after the concrete terrace where Perth's rock and roll crowds gathered to dance in the 1950s and 60s. Today it combines a deep skate bowl, a street plaza, a 3-on-3 basketball court and the bouldering wall, which were built in the Scarborough foreshore redevelopment for the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority and the City of Stirling. The City describes the wall as the first of its kind in Western Australia.
Two sculpted blocks of textured panels carry the holds and big blue volumes, with padded matting all around them. A Perth guide puts the climbable surface at about 198 square metres, with some 1,350 holds. The City pitches it at everyone, whatever their age or ability, and reminds climbers that bouldering means moving sideways and back down as well as up.
