Bouldering gyms
Locally owned Portside Boulders opened its first gym in O'Connor, on the edge of Fremantle, in 2017. It's still the group's hub, with a MoonBoard, a yoga studio and a beer garden. Osborne Park followed in 2019, with Kilter and Moon boards and the West Coast Blocs competition each August, then Willetton in 2021, with an overhanging Cave and an upstairs café. Portside Joondalup opened in May 2025 near Lakeside Joondalup, a 12-minute walk from the station, with plywood walls and Perth's first Decoy board. Each keeps more than 100 problems up, entry has no time limit and one membership covers all four.
Adrenaline Vault Cockburn opened in Cockburn Central in August 2023 as a bouldering-only gym, with about 750 m² of walls up to 4.5 m high. In Wangara, The Boulder Hub opened in November 2013 as Perth's first dedicated bouldering gym. It is run by two coaches who have both competed at a Bouldering World Cup, and two big wall sections are reset every week.
Ropes, lead and speed
Adrenaline Vault Belmont, billed as Perth's largest indoor climbing centre, pairs top-rope and lead walls and two auto-belays with a Walltopia bouldering area and a training room with Kilter and Tension boards. Its three-hour Lead Course gives a lead pass to climbers who can top-rope grade 18. Oasis Climbing in Malaga took over the walls of City Summit, one of Perth's first climbing centres: 10.5 m walls with more than 80 top-rope routes and around 30 lead routes graded 18 to 30, plus 5 m bouldering. Sport Climbing WA holds the state lead titles on its walls.
Family-owned Urban Jungle in Jandakot is the only gym in Western Australia with all three Olympic disciplines: roped walls it calls the tallest indoors in Perth, with lead, top-rope and auto-belay lines, a bouldering area and a timed speed wall that copies the first 10 m of the official route. All three roped gyms ask you to pass their own lead test or course before you lead.
Free and family walls
The Scarborough Rock Climbing Wall is a free outdoor bouldering wall in the Snake Pit, the City of Stirling's skate and BMX area on the Esplanade: two sculpted blocks with about 1,350 holds over padded matting, open every day from 7am until dusk. For younger children, iPlay Carousel on level 2 of Westfield Carousel in Cannington runs 45-minute Clip 'n Climb sessions on auto-belay challenge walls for ages five and up, at $15 for adults and $12 for children.
Prices and passes
Casual adult entry is $20 at Oasis, $23 at The Boulder Hub, $24 at Urban Jungle, $25 at Portside and $26 at Adrenaline Vault. Friday is student day at Portside ($16), Adrenaline Vault and The Boulder Hub ($18 each), and shoe hire adds $5 to $8. First-timers can save with a starter deal: Portside's Intro Pack is three entries with shoe and chalk hire for $60, The Boulder Hub's is three visits with shoes for $50, and Adrenaline Vault's $35 two-week pass covers both its gyms, gear included.
Memberships are mostly billed weekly: from $22 a week at Oasis, $24.95 at Urban Jungle on a 12-month contract, $32.95 at Adrenaline Vault and $34 at Portside on a monthly contract, which is about $147 a month. The Boulder Hub sells pre-paid memberships with no contract instead. Members of the Climbers' Association of WA (CAWA) get cheaper entry at most of these gyms.
Beginners and kids
Portside, Oasis and The Boulder Hub give first-timers a free induction. Adrenaline Vault runs a four-week Beginner's Bouldering course ($180), and Oasis has an adult Academy at $33 a week with membership included. Age rules differ: Portside lets children from four climb with one supervising adult each, Oasis fits four-year-olds into its smallest harnesses and teaches parents to belay, while Adrenaline Vault and Urban Jungle keep bouldering to over-12s outside their classes.
Children's classes start early, with Pebbles at Portside (ages 4 to 8) and Oasis (4 to 6), Wombats at Urban Jungle (5 to 7, with a parent) and term-time squads at The Boulder Hub and Adrenaline Vault from age five. Oasis, Urban Jungle and Portside also run school holiday programmes.
Climbing outdoors near Perth
The nearest crags are in the Perth Hills. Mountain Quarry, known locally as Boya Quarry, in Greenmount National Park and Statham's Quarry at Gooseberry Hill are the classic ones, and both must be booked in advance through the Parks and Wildlife office in Mundaring (9290 6100, weekdays). Churchman's has big, juggy holds that CAWA says feel a bit like the gym. The association sells the Perth Rock Climbing Guide to crags within two hours of the city, runs Transition to Outdoors days at Mountain Quarry and recommends a course with a qualified instructor before your first trip. For sea cliffs, the South Coast and Kalbarri, see the Western Australia page.
Closed gyms and the wall in Mandurah
Older guides still list two gyms that have closed: Rockface in Balcatta, open since 1996, shut in 2026, and Iris Boulders in Canning Vale in 2024. South of the metro area, Mandurah Indoor Rock Climbing in Greenfields has top ropes, lead and boulders reset every week, for $21 a visit.
