Seattle, Washington, United States
Seattle Bouldering Project U District opened in November 2024 inside the 112-year-old University National Bank Building on University Way, known locally as The Ave, across the street from the U District light rail station and steps from the University of Washington. Bouldering Project redesigned the building as a climbing gym awash with natural light: the 1950s-era ballroom became bouldering terrain, spread over two floors with roughly 7,000 sq ft of climbing, and the 200,000-pound bank vault now holds an infrared sauna for up to 26 people.
Problems are set in colour circuits rather than single V-grades, from yellow (about V0 to V1) up to white (V8 and harder), as the circuit chart on the wall shows.
Climbing courses include the four-session Bouldering 2 for intermediate climbers, and after-school clubs cater for ages 5 to 14. This autumn the gym runs a five-week team Bouldering League with themed Friday league nights. Monthly climb nights with Queer Mountaineers, 1.5 Gen Asians and Rising Roots offer a free first visit, and a monthly Breakfast Club serves pancakes and coffee. Memberships cover all four Seattle gyms and every Bouldering Project gym in the US.

“The semi-second-floor area is highly underappreciated. Giving members a spot to relax, study, watch tv, chat with friends, it really adds to the community aspect of Bouldering Project.”
“Small, so I'd recommend going early on weekdays if you want to get a good climbing session in. Great deal for memberships, and very trans friendly gym.”
“Fun boulder problems, clean facilities, friendly and knowledgeable staff. Small workout area. But the crown jewel is probably the sauna in the original vault - what a cool idea!”
