Bouldering at The Gravity Vault Montclair

The Gravity Vault's first bouldering-only gym opened in August 2021 in downtown Montclair, on the Seymour Street plaza across from the Wellmont Theater. It has 12,000 sq ft of bouldering with more than 120 problems on walls up to 16ft, including an arch, overhangs and slab.

Training and facilities

• Boards: an 8ft LED adjustable MoonBoard and a 12ft LED adjustable Kilter Board, plus hangboards and campus rungs.
• Fitness: a cross-training space with a squat rig, barbells, dumbbells, treadmills, rowers, a cable machine and a Marpo rope trainer.
• Other: a Valo augmented-reality climbing wall, a retail shop, a lounge and workspace with Wi-Fi, a multi-purpose room for parties, meetings and yoga, and locker rooms with showers.

Visiting

Experienced boulderers can walk in with a day pass. Newcomers can book Bouldering 101, an hour-long introduction run at least three days a week, or a private Bouldering on Demand session, and there are six-week Bouldering 102 courses, hangboard and dyno clinics, power yoga and strength classes. The gym suits climbers aged 7 and over; 5- and 6-year-olds can climb with a staff member by reservation, and under-14s need an adult watching them throughout. Children's classes, break camps, youth teams and birthday parties are also on offer, and Friday evenings bring supervised slacklining.

The gym validates parking at the South Fullerton Parking Plaza (7 Seymour Street), which cuts the first three hours to $1 an hour.
