Middletown, New Jersey, United States
The Gravity Vault's Monmouth County gym sits on Kanes Lane, just off Route 35 in Middletown. It opened in February 2014 as the chain's first franchise-run gym, in a 20,000 sq ft building with about 14,000 sq ft of climbing, and bills itself as the largest climbing gym in the county. New flooring has recently gone down under both the roped walls and the bouldering.
The roped area has more than 55 top-rope stations, auto belays, a lead arch and two stem chimneys, with arêtes and overhangs along the walls. There are over 80 boulder problems, and for training there's an LED MoonBoard plus campus and hang boards. A weights and cardio area, a lounge with sofas and wifi, a vending machine, private toilets and a shop complete the set-up.
First-timers can book a one-hour staff-belayed session for up to four climbers aged five and over, drop in for two instructor-belayed climbs, or come as a group of five or more for a 90-minute introduction. To belay yourself, take the top-rope belay class, held on Wednesday and Friday evenings and weekend afternoons; a lead class runs every few weeks, and a four-week adult welcome class covers bouldering, top roping and warming up.
Six-week kids' classes for ages 5 to 13, school-break and summer camps, scout badges, birthday parties and four levels of youth team keep younger climbers busy, while adults get technique classes and weekly yoga. Cheaper Friday evenings, two-for-one adult passes on Mondays and a Wednesday student day run every week, and the calendar adds pride nights, fundraisers and a Halloween lights-out party.
