Obertraun, Upper Austria, Austria
The Bundessport- und Freizeitzentrum (BSFZ) Obertraun, one of the Austrian Sports Resorts, lies between the Dachstein, the Krippenstein and the Hallstätter See and hosts training camps in many sports. Its climbing hall, split into indoor and outdoor areas, has about 450 m² of roped walls up to around 14 metres with top-rope stations and lead routes: 23 routes from UIAA 3 to 10, suited to beginners and school groups as well as experienced climbers. Two auto-belays let you climb without a partner, and the 110 m² bouldering area includes two natural boulder rocks.
The hall is open to the public, not just resort guests. It opens on weekdays; at weekends it opens only if you phone by 15:00 on the Friday before. Tickets are sold at reception until 19:00 and in the sports lounge until 21:00, and you need photo ID to buy one and to sign the consent form that every climber must sign. Climbing is at your own risk, though supervision at the wall can be booked by phone for a fee. Children and young people must come with an adult who has a ticket, but young people may climb on their own once a parent has signed a waiver at the hall. School classes and groups must book ahead, and pupils can hire shoes, a harness and a carabiner. The hall closes whenever the resort is closed.
As we last found them. Prices change, so check the wall's website before you go.
