Climbing at Life Time Burr Ridge

Life Time Burr Ridge is a large athletic club on Burr Ridge Parkway, just off the I-55 and I-294 interchange. Alongside its pools, courts and studios it has an indoor rock wall that Life Time gives as 30 feet high, offering bouldering over mats as well as roped climbing. Ropes are run on partner belays or auto-belays, depending on the club, and an instructor is on hand during open hours to help and to belay.

When and how to climb

The wall is staffed only in its Rock Wall hours, on Tuesday to Thursday evenings and Saturday late mornings, and no booking is needed. It is open to members and their guests, and non-members can buy a $50 day pass that covers the whole club for the day. Memberships start at $239 a month and run month to month. Harnesses and ropes are provided, and trainers are fine if you have no climbing shoes.

Kids and families

Children aged five and over on a junior membership can climb in open hours while a parent stays in the club, once a parent or guardian has signed Life Time's climbing waiver. Instructors run Rock Climbing classes for ages 5 to 11 on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and at weekends, and the club hosts climbing birthday parties.

Beyond the wall

Membership also covers a large workout floor, yoga, Pilates, cycle and dance classes, indoor and outdoor pools with water slides, basketball and pickleball courts, a sauna, steam rooms and whirlpools, LifeSpa, the LifeCafe and a work lounge, plus the nearby Burr Ridge Sport and Racquet club with its tennis courts.

- Day pass (a one-day membership): full member access to this club for the day, including the rock wall in its open hours; the fee counts towards your first month if you join

- Ages 13 and under: free with an adult's day pass

- Guest hours: 06:00 - 21:00 on weekdays, 06:00 - 20:00 at weekends

- Members can bring guests on a member guest pass, the same guest no more than once every 60 days

- Harnesses and ropes provided; climbing shoes optional, as trainers are fine

- Under-18s need Life Time's climbing waiver, signed by a parent or guardian

- Adult membership from $239 a month, month to month with 30 days' notice to cancel

- Family members can be added; the monthly rate depends on who is included

- Signature membership adds Signature Group Training, early reservations and access to more clubs

- Includes the nearby Burr Ridge Sport and Racquet club, with indoor and outdoor tennis courts
