Climbing at Life Time Lakeville

Life Time Lakeville is a 115,000 sq ft athletic club at Dodd Boulevard and 185th Street, opened in 2007. Its 30-foot indoor rock wall stands at one end of the gymnasium, beside the basketball court: a sculpted, rock-textured arch leads through to a taller face set with routes, above a padded floor. Roped climbing is on partner belays or auto-belays, depending on how the club has the wall set up, and there are short bouldering problems over mats.

When and how to climb

The wall is staffed only in its Rock Wall hours: Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, Wednesday and Friday lunchtimes and Saturday mornings. It is for members and their guests, but anyone can buy a $50 day pass in the Life Time app, which gives full member access for the day, and under-14s come free with an adult's pass. Memberships start at $219 a month and run month to month. Harnesses are provided, and trainers are fine if you have no climbing shoes.

Classes and kids

Open Climb runs on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, alongside a short Intro to Rock Climbing class and an hour-long top-rope belay lesson. Children aged 5 to 11 can climb with a parent on hand once a parent or guardian has signed Life Time's climbing waiver. There are weekly kids' climbing classes, progressive classes for junior members and a Climb Team for 12- to 17-year-olds that prepares them for competitions, and climbing is one of the birthday party activities.

Beyond the wall

Membership also covers the workout floor, studio classes including yoga, barre and dance, indoor and outdoor pools with water slides, indoor tennis and pickleball courts, basketball, saunas and steam rooms, the LifeCafe, a lounge and bar, and a work lounge.
