Climbing at Life Time Bloomingdale

Life Time Bloomingdale is a 108,000 sq ft athletic club at Gary Avenue and Scott Drive. Its 30-foot indoor rock wall has rock-textured faces for roped climbing, belayed by a partner or one of the rock wall team, with auto-belays for climbing solo, and short bouldering problems over mats.

When and how to climb

The wall is staffed only in its Rock Wall hours, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6pm to 8pm, when an instructor is on hand to help and belay; no booking is needed. It is for members and their guests, but anyone can buy a $40 day pass in the Life Time app, which gives full member access for the day, and under-14s come free with an adult's pass. Memberships start at $159 a month and run month to month. Climbing shoes are optional, as trainers are fine.

Kids

Children aged 5 to 11 have short instructor-led Rock Climbing classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, open to all members, and junior members aged 3 to 11 can join Traverse Wall sessions most days, which teach the basics by climbing sideways rather than up. A parent or guardian must sign Life Time's climbing waiver first. Progressive kids' climbing classes cost extra, and climbing is one of the birthday party activities.

Beyond the wall

Membership also covers the workout floor, studio classes including yoga, barre, Zumba and indoor cycling, the pool, pickleball and basketball courts, a cedarwood sauna and eucalyptus steam room, LifeSpa, and the LifeCafe with its lounge and bar.
