Arnoldstein, Carinthia, Austria
Kletterhalle Arnoldstein is the climbing wall of the Naturfreunde Dobratsch, in the gym of the Naturparkschule Dobratsch on Kärntner Straße. The club opened it in 1995 so that it could climb in winter and in any weather, and has extended it since. It now has about 180 m² of climbing up to 7.5 metres high, with around 30 roped routes graded 4 to 7b. Two hydraulically adjustable walls cover about 50 m², alongside some 60 m² of roof sections, 45 m² of overhangs, panorama sections and areas for bouldering.
The hall opens on set evenings from mid-October to the end of April; in summer the club takes its courses to the nearby Klettergarten Arnoldstein crag instead. Non-members can buy a single ticket or a season card at lower rates for Naturfreunde members, and harnesses and ropes can be hired. You climb at your own risk: the hall rules ask for a partner check before every climb and a figure-of-eight tie-in, even on top rope. Parking is at the Gemeindeplatz.
The club runs top-rope, lead, bouldering and belaying courses, and youth training for children from six on Friday and Sunday evenings. Courses need Naturfreunde membership, apart from taster sessions.
