Halifax's climbing is mostly bouldering: Seven Bays has three bouldering gyms, on Gottingen Street, at Bayers Lake and in Dartmouth, and one day pass covers all of them. For ropes, East Peak Climbing has 35 to 50-foot walls in the former Oxford Theatre on Quinpool Road. Outside, Nova Scotia's sharp coastal granite, from Chebucto Head to Peggy's Cove, is a bouldering destination in its own right.

Seven Bays opened in 2015 in a former garage at 2019 Gottingen Street in the North End, next to Propeller Brewing, as a bouldering café started by the family behind Montréal's Allez Up with a local partner. Seven Bays Gottingen has 8,000 sq ft of bouldering on 13 to 16-foot walls, reset weekly, a training area called the Seven Baysment with a MoonBoard, a campus board and 15° and 45° walls, and a café with local draught beer and wine. Friday community night costs $10.
The two newer gyms are bigger. Seven Bays Bayers Lake on Chain Lake Drive has 12,000 sq ft with a Kilter Board and is home to the youth teams, and Seven Bays Dartmouth, on Brownlow Avenue in Burnside, has 12,000 sq ft with a Tension Board 2 and a strength and cardio area, and was open by June 2025. Bouldering 101, for ages 16 and over, cost $49 plus tax in October 2026, including a free month.
East Peak, Halifax's roped gym, opened in the former Oxford Theatre on 29 February 2020, closed for the pandemic about two weeks later and reopened that June. Its 35 to 50-foot walls have about 50 routes for top rope and lead and five auto-belays that move between walls, plus a 15-foot bouldering wall. A day pass covers bouldering and the auto-belays, while top-roping needs a belay test or course. New climbers can buy an intro membership, $40 for 10 days with rentals in October 2026, and the gym sells the Rock Climbing Nova Scotia guidebook.
Dalhousie University's Dalplex has a newly refurbished bouldering wall in its fieldhouse. Dal students get in through their fees, the public can buy a Dalplex day pass, $13.16 in October 2026, and booking is recommended. Dalplex no longer mentions its old roped Rock Court, so don't rely on older directories that list it.
In October 2026 an adult day pass cost $23 at East Peak and $24 at Seven Bays, where it's valid all day at all three gyms.
Mountain Project calls Nova Scotia "the land of the sharp granite", with bouldering that has become a real destination. The closest is Chebucto Head, about 30 minutes from downtown with a five-minute approach; some areas are off limits when the surf is up, and it's often foggy in July. Peggy's Cove and Polly's Cove, about 30 km from the city, have hundreds of granite boulders and are best in November and December. Dover Island is reached by boat: in July 2025 the crossing from Ocean Spray B&B in West Dover cost $25 a person, with a $100 minimum and three days' notice. Mobeta is a free guide to Halifax-area bouldering, and Climb Nova Scotia runs Boulderfest, an outdoor bouldering festival on an island off West Dover each August.
Nova Scotia's roped climbing is generally short and technical, mostly on solid granite. The biggest crag, Mainface, off Highway 357 near Musquodoboit Harbour, is about 70 metres high and mostly trad, but access has been granted only to Climb Nova Scotia members, and the landowner can ask to see a membership card. Check Climb Nova Scotia's access notices before you go: they list closures including Neverland Crag, Trout Cove at Dover, bouldering at Terrence Bay Woods and the old trail to the Glove Wall. In winter, Mountain Project lists ice at crags such as Cape Chignecto and Cape Split.
Climb Nova Scotia, incorporated in 1991 and a member of Climbing Escalade Canada since 2024, runs the competition season: a senior bouldering qualifier at Seven Bays on 5 December 2026, a youth bouldering qualifier there on 30 January 2027, and East Peak's youth lead qualifier, the Roxford Rumble, with its date to be confirmed. Nova Scotia is also sending two male and two female climbers to sport climbing's Canada Games debut in Quebec City in March 2027.
