Climbing Gyms in Ottawa and Gatineau

Ottawa and Gatineau have a growing climbing scene on both sides of the river, with day passes of about $20, cheaper than in Toronto. Coyote Rock Gym, the city's first gym, has roped walls and lead climbing, Klimat opened a big bouldering gym near downtown in 2025, and Altitude Gym has centres in Kanata, Orléans and a former church in Gatineau. Outside, Gatineau Park has eight cliffs where climbing is allowed.

Roped climbing

Coyote Rock Gym on St Laurent Boulevard, in the east end, has been open since 1992 and calls itself Ottawa's first climbing gym. It has more than 18,000 sq ft of climbing: over 40 top-rope walls graded 5.4 to 5.13, a lead area with two overhanging roofs, six bouldering areas, a Kilter Board, a MoonBoard and campus boards. Newcomers get a free top-rope lesson. Across the river, Altitude Gym Gatineau, the chain's first centre, opened in a former church in 2010. It has more than 100 top-rope and lead routes on walls up to 45 feet, about a dozen auto-belays, bouldering, a training room with Kilter, Tension and Moon boards, and an outdoor bouldering park.

Bouldering

Klimat Ottawa opened in September 2025 in a 16,700 sq ft former indoor skate and bike park on City Centre Avenue, just outside downtown, with a transit stop across the street. It has 4,200 sq ft of bouldering up to 16 feet, reset weekly, a Tension Board 2, a Kilter Board and a spray wall, plus a fitness area and a vegetarian café. Its sister gym, Klimat Wakefield, opened in 2019 in a timber-framed building in the Gatineau Hills, a little over half an hour north of Ottawa, with indoor and outdoor bouldering, a yoga loft and a pizza kitchen.

Altitude Orléans, opened in 2023, has 17,000 sq ft of bouldering and training space with a 16 by 12 ft Kilter Board, and Altitude Kanata, opened in 2017, has more than 250 problems, auto-belay routes over 30 feet and the Quarry, a family zone with an augmented-reality wall and ninja courses. In Gatineau, Bloc 9.81 on boulevard de la Gappe resets twice a week, added a spray wall in June 2026 and has a bistro serving local craft beer.

Prices

In October 2026 an adult day pass cost $20 at Coyote, including tax, and at both Klimat gyms, and $21.50 at Bloc 9.81 and at the three Altitude centres, where it's plus tax. Coyote's monthly membership was $60 by direct debit, and an Altitude membership, $76 a month, covers all three of its centres. Bloc 9.81 lets students climb for $12 on Tuesdays from 16:00.

Universities and colleges

Neither Carleton nor the University of Ottawa has a climbing wall. Algonquin College's ARC in Nepean has a 34-foot wall with five auto-belays and a bouldering wall for ARC members, who need a safety orientation first.

Climbing outdoors

In Gatineau Park, the National Capital Commission (NCC) permits climbing on eight rock faces in the Home Cliff, Twin Ribs and Western Cwm sectors of the Eardley Escarpment, about half an hour's drive north of Aylmer. The climbing is short, steep sport climbing on old granite, with routes up to 20 metres, and it's free for experienced climbers with their own gear. The NCC bans bolting and new routes, mixed climbing and dry-tooling, and anchoring to trees, and offenders can be fined. Ice climbing is allowed in winter when there's enough snow and ice. Peregrine falcons nest on the escarpment and are highly sensitive to people. Access has a history: in 2010 the NCC considered banning all activity along the escarpment, after a temporary agreement that the Alpine Club and local gym owners negotiated in 2005 had expired.

Further afield, Calabogie, about an hour and 20 minutes west of downtown, has nearly a kilometre of fractured granite with sport and trad routes, boulder problems and ice in winter. Ottawa Tourism also suggests Mont Ste-Marie, Lac Sam and Lac Tucker, and the big trad walls of Bon Echo are within two hours. The École d'escalade de l'Outaouais guides in the region from May to October.

Clubs and competitions

The Alpine Club of Canada's Ottawa Section, founded in 1949, has about 425 members, runs introductory rock and ice courses, and supports Crag Care, which maintains Calabogie. Climbing Escalade Canada, the national federation, is based in Ottawa. Bloc 9.81 holds a monthly Pleine Lune competition and the bigger Méga Lune in December, and Coyote runs a Dry Tool Weekend with an open dry-tooling competition. The nearest Ontario Climbing Federation events are at Boiler Room Climbing in Kingston: speed on 22 November 2026 and the speed provincials on 10 January 2027.
