Where to learn to ice climb in Canada
From Canmore's long season to ice walls and frozen falls in or near Edmonton, Quebec City, Montréal and Trois-Rivières: where to try ice climbing in Canada, and how to start safely.

Quebec City's climbing is led by Délire, a local company that builds climbing walls as well as running bouldering gyms in Sainte-Foy, on boulevard Pierre-Bertrand and across the river in Lévis, and in 2026 the independent Gecko Bloc opened downtown in Saint-Roch. For ropes there is Roc Gyms, Quebec's first climbing centre, and L'Accroché in Pintendre, and in winter the frozen Montmorency Falls draw ice climbers.

Délire's largest gym, Délire Sainte-Foy on avenue Saint-Jean-Baptiste, has 17,500 sq ft of bouldering with more than 130 problems, new ones twice a week, a Tension Board 2 and a bistro. Délire Pierre-Bertrand is a bright 15,300 sq ft gym with a tilting training board and a yoga room, and Délire Lévis, opened in 2023 on the South Shore, has natural wood walls up to 16 feet and junior circuits for younger climbers. One Délire membership or multi-entry pass works at all three, and its long-running Beauport gym has now closed.
Downtown, Gecko Bloc on boulevard Charest Est in Saint-Roch is an independent bouldering gym founded by four climbers, which opened in 2026 with a training area and a lounge. It's open every day from 09:00 to 22:00, needs no booking, and staff show first-time visitors around.
Centre d'escalade Roc Gyms, beside the Colisée in Limoilou, opened in 1993 and calls itself Quebec's first climbing centre. It has two bouldering rooms, a roped hall about 12 metres high with top rope, lead and four auto-belays, a Ninja Warrior course, spas and a sauna, and with its partners it runs outdoor rock, ice and via ferrata trips. In Pintendre, on the Lévis side, L'Accroché combines bouldering with 40-foot roped walls for top rope and lead. Université Laval's PEPS sports centre also has a roped climbing wall on campus.
In October 2026 an adult day pass cost $24.50 at Délire's gyms, $22 at Gecko Bloc, $19.75 at Roc Gyms and $17.49 at L'Accroché. Délire's membership costs $129 for the first month and $93 a month after that, and Roc Gyms' monthly membership starts at $64 with a three-month minimum. In Quebec, climbing with ropes usually needs the gym's own belay accreditation, so book a lesson or test on your first visit.
In winter the cliffs beside the Montmorency Falls freeze into ice routes up to 83 metres high, in sun for most of the day; you need crampons and ice axes, or a guided trip. About 25 minutes from the city, Pont-Rouge holds Festiglace on the third weekend of February, with free ice-climbing trials, competitions and clinics.
The nearest rock is in the Forêt ancienne du mont Wright at Stoneham, less than 30 minutes from downtown, with easy routes that are popular for teaching. Further west, Lac Long at Saint-Alban has 17 sectors of gneiss cliffs, managed by the Fédération québécoise de la montagne et de l'escalade (FQME) and the Club de Montagne et d'Escalade de Québec. Both need an FQME membership or a day pass. Further afield are the granite walls of Les Palissades in Charlevoix and the crack climbing of Cap Trinité on the Saguenay fjord, where only the south-west face may be climbed, from 1 August to 31 March.
Sport climbing makes its Canada Games debut at the 2027 Canada Winter Games in Quebec City, with bouldering on 9 and 10 March and lead on 12 and 13 March 2027. Quebec's bouldering selection takes place at Délire Sainte-Foy on 7 November 2026, followed the next day by a round of the FQME's Coupe Québec, and the Club Compétitif d'Escalade de Québec trains young competitors at Délire's gyms.

The FQME's Coupe Québec circuit visits gyms in Trois-Rivières, Quebec City and Greater Montréal this autumn, ahead of the Speed Nationals in Montréal in January and sport climbing's Canada Games debut in Quebec City in March 2027.
