In Hasselt
Monk Bouldergym Hasselt, on the Sint-Jozefsstraat, opened in June 2023 as the Belgian branch of Monk, which also has bouldering gyms in Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Hilversum. It has around 200 boulders, a café, a shop and showers, and its monthly memberships and ten-visit cards work at every Monk gym. Payment is by card only, and there are free car parks about five minutes' walk away.
Klimzaal Olympia, on the Kuringersteenweg, is part of Sportcentrum Olympia, which also has bowling and squash, and calls itself the first indoor climbing hall in Limburg. It has 1,000 m² of roped walls, 17 metres high and 26 metres wide, with more than 100 routes on 30 ropes, and a separate 4-metre bouldering wall. Harnesses and belay devices are lent free and a supervisor is always on hand, and its Start to Climb offer gives newcomers a free two-week pass with two lessons.
Beside the Japanese Garden, the canyoning club Canyon Team Vlaanderen runs a 12-metre outdoor tower that it has fitted out for rope techniques. Anyone can book a day on it through the club's online form (€20, or less for members of KBF clubs) and top-rope with their own gear and insurance; leading isn't allowed.
Further out
Alpamayo, on the be-MINE site in Beringen, 17 km north-west, has been in the power station of the old Beringen coal mine since 2016, with walls among the turbines and generators. Its 1,300 m² lead hall has walls of 13 and 18 metres with about 170 routes on 60 ropes, and there are 400 m² of bouldering, including a sunken boulder pit, as well as a Clip 'n Climb and a café in the old control room. You don't need a belay certificate: newcomers get a free introduction of about 15 minutes, and belayers must be 13 or over. See what Belgian halls ask of roped climbers.
Crux Bouldergym in Herk-de-Stad, 12 km west, calls itself Limburg's first bouldering hall. It's open every day, parking, changing rooms and showers are free, and it doesn't accept foreign bank cards. Sport Vlaanderen Genk's 11-metre wall, 14 km east, is for hire only, by groups with their own instructor, so there's no drop-in climbing there.
Prices and passes
In October 2026 an adult day ticket cost €10 at Crux, €13 at Olympia, €14.50 at Monk and €15 at Alpamayo (€14 for bouldering only). Monk's monthly membership cost €61.50. Alpamayo, Olympia and Gustaaf Klimt in Turnhout share an annual pass (€550), and Monk's passes also work at its Dutch gyms.
Competitions and clubs
Alpamayo runs a lead series in November, Monk holds local bouldering comps called LOCO, and Crux has held a bouldering competition every year since 2019. Monk and Alpamayo also host rounds of the Regional Climbing Youth Cup for young climbers. The Flemish federation's clubs here include the Limburgse Bergsport Vereniging and Olympia Jeugdklimteam in Hasselt, Crux Climbing Team and the Alpamayo Klim Club.
Climbing outdoors
There's no rock in Belgian Limburg. The nearest crags are in the Ourthe and Meuse valleys around Liège, roughly 45 km away, and they're open only to members of a climbing federation and the guests they invite: see our guide to climbing outdoors in Belgium.
