Mesa Rim began here: the group's first climbing and fitness centre opened on Mesa Rim Road in Mira Mesa, San Diego, in 2010, and the Mesa Rim Climbing Academy training centre stands next door. The roped walls are 50 feet tall, with top-rope and lead routes and cracks used for the gym's crack-climbing course, and the bouldering walls stand 14 to 16 feet high.
Bouldering needs only shoes and chalk, and staff offer free tours and bouldering orientations. Roped climbing needs a partner who has passed the top-rope belay test: the one-hour belay lesson is free for members and $12 for guests, and Learn to Climb costs $55 for members or $75 with a day pass and rental gear included. Leading requires the lead test, your own rope of at least 40 metres and an assisted-braking belay device, and Intro to Lead Climbing ($150) and Intro to Crack Climbing ($75) build those skills. Private lessons for adults and team-building packages are also available.
Passes include the yoga and fitness timetable, and the fitness area has hangboards, campus boards and system boards, free weights, rowers, an air bike, treadmills and spin bikes. There are locker rooms with showers and a sauna, wifi workspaces and a pro shop. Youth programmes run from Mini Monsters and Rock Monsters through Basecamp, Ascent and Peak to the Summit competition team. The gym hosts USA Climbing youth events and an October bouldering league, and its calendar includes monthly meet-ups with the Queer Climbing Collective, Escalemos and The Phoenix, the Mesa Mingle social and Sunday sensory-friendly mornings.

“Super helpful and friendly staff that were able to do belay tests very smoothly and promptly, very clean and well kept facility, walls and holds are stellar quality.”
“This is my home gym. The grading is perhaps hard compared to other gyms but the climbs are fun! Good setting variety in both bouldering & ropes.”
