Upland, California, United States
Hangar 18 Upland is where the Southern California chain began: it opened in 1998 and still climbs inside an old arched-roof hangar on East Stowell Street. It is now one of 11 Hangar 18 gyms, and a membership covers them all.
The setters reset the auto-belay and rope routes on Tuesdays and the boulders on Thursdays. Yoga classes run on Sunday afternoons and Wednesday evenings, and the gym puts on occasional fun comps, such as a Christmas clipping contest.
Every newcomer signs the waiver, watches the orientation video and books an intro class for each style they want to climb: top rope (belayers must be 14 or over), auto-belay or bouldering (ages 6 and up). Classes include a day pass and rental shoes, plus a harness for roped climbing. Climbers aged 14 and over can learn to lead on a three-week course, and weekend group events for birthdays and companies come with belay staff.
The focus is on the walls: reviewers note there is no weights area and no air conditioning, so summer sessions can be hot.
