Bouldering in San Clemente

Hangar 18 San Clemente opened in 2014 as the eighth Hangar 18 gym, and it's one of the chain's bouldering-only gyms. It's on Calle Trepadora, and its membership also covers the other ten Hangar 18 gyms across Southern California.

There are more than 75 problems, at least 30 of them suited to young climbers, on walls of many angles: a flat 90-degree roof, a cave, a slab, a barrel and a 45-degree wall among them, with top-outs around the gym. The setters put up new problems every Tuesday, a comp-style World Cup Weekly problem has been part of the mix, and climbers often say the grades here feel stiff.

  • Training: a Kilter Board.
  • Yoga: a dedicated yoga room, with classes on Monday and Wednesday evenings (18:00 to 19:00) that are free for members.

First visits and prices

First-timers sign a waiver, watch an orientation video and take the 30-minute Intro to Bouldering class, which costs $35 for adults and $30 for children 13 and under and includes a day pass and rental shoes. Climbers must be 6 or older, and under-14s need an adult to spot them. After that, a day pass is $22 ($18 for children), shoes rent for $3, and membership is $54 a month with no initiation fee and a guest pass each month.
