Auto belays and bouldering in Riverside

Hangar 18 East Riverside opened in 2014 as the seventh Hangar 18 gym. It's in an industrial unit on Iowa Avenue, and its membership also covers the other ten Hangar 18 gyms across Southern California, including Hangar 18 Riverside on Arlington Avenue.

The climbing here is auto belay and bouldering:

  • Auto belays: a route wall given over entirely to eight auto-belay lanes, so you can climb without a partner.
  • Bouldering: more than 100 problems, with several top-out sections.
  • Training: a Kilter Board set at 45 degrees and a training area.
  • Fitness centre and yoga room alongside the walls.

The setters reset sections on Wednesdays and Fridays, working their way around the gym.

First visits and prices

First-timers sign a waiver, watch an orientation video and take an intro class for each style they want to climb: auto belay (20 minutes) or bouldering (30 minutes, from age 6, with an adult spotting under-14s). Each class costs $35 for adults and $30 for children 13 and under, and includes a day pass and rental gear. After that, a day pass is $22 ($18 for children), shoes and harnesses rent for $3 each, and membership is $54 a month with no initiation fee and a guest pass each month.

- No initiation fee; after the first full month it runs month to month and can be frozen or cancelled online

- Covers all 11 Hangar 18 gyms, with one guest pass a month and 10% off retail gear

- Students, military and veterans, first responders, medical professionals and teachers: $44 a month (two-month contract)

- Family: $168 a month for the first four members, then $38 a month for each additional member

- Prepaid: one month $79, college semester $160 ($220 with rental gear), one year $525
