Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Stronghold is Calgary Climbing Centre's gym just north of the downtown core, on 15th Avenue NW. It is best known for its long routes, with constantly changing climbs on 40 ft walls for top-rope and lead, and four auto-belays for climbing without a partner. The gym closed for most of 2023 for a full renovation and reopened that November with all-new route and bouldering walls, a new front desk and retail area, a café space and a new workout area.
Training kit includes a MoonBoard, free weights, a rig with hangboards and a stationary bike, and there are changing rooms with lockers and a shop stocking a full range of climbing gear. Shoes, harnesses, belay devices and chalk bags can be hired. Everyone signs an online waiver before climbing, and children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
Memberships cover either a single gym or every Calgary Climbing Centre location.

“Upstairs (boulder) was very small, but it gave off a cozy vibe. The boulders there were mostly harder than their tags… I was surprised to see how little people there were.”
“Overall a great "group" of gyms but the renovated layout of this location is unfortunate since the reno… stupid cubbies and lockers on the floor below the entrance.”
“We paid about $24 dollars for an adult day pass, plus $6 for shoe rental, and another $6 for the straps… There are a lot of beginner friendly lanes so don't be scared to give it a shot!”
