Roped climbing in Leeds

BIG Depot Leeds, on Gelderd Road in Holbeck, is Depot Climbing's roped climbing centre for the city. Since an extensive rebuild it has over 200 routes of roped climbing and around 60 boulders, with top ropes, lead lines and auto-belays below and a bouldering area on the mezzanine. An Unlimited Climbing Pass also covers Depot Armley, Depot's bouldering and gym centre in Leeds, and the chain's other centres.

Learning the ropes

  • Learn to Auto: a one-hour session that signs you off on the auto-belays.
  • Learn to Belay: two-hour sessions towards the top-rope competency check.
  • Learn to Lead: double sessions for confident top-ropers, plus 1:1 coaching.
  • Family inductions for groups of up to six.

Socials and juniors

Free-with-entry socials start with a free brew: Women's Night on Mondays (19:00 to 21:00, with a lead climbing focus), a Para Social for disabled and neurodivergent climbers on Thursdays (£5 including hire), Belay Buddies on Fridays and an LGBTQIA+ night on Sundays. Juniors have Wild Climbers (4 to 6), weekend Kids Club and Junior Climbing, Teen Climbing, NICAS courses and holiday camps.

Good to know

Fridays from 14:00 to 16:00 are sensory-friendly hours. The centre is cashless, a carer gets in free with a disabled climber, and there is a café and a climbing shop by reception.

    BIG Depot hosts the fourth round of the BMC's Youth Climbing Series for young climbers. The centre is closed to other climbers that day, and some lines are out of use from 19 October while it prepares.
